Badami

Cradle of Chalukyan Rock-Cut Art

Overview

Badami is a town in northern Karnataka that served as the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty from the 6th to 8th centuries, when it was known as Vatapi. It is celebrated for four rock-cut cave temples carved into a red sandstone cliff above Agastya Lake, three Hindu, dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu, and one Jain, dated to the late 6th century. Together with nearby Aihole and the UNESCO-listed Pattadakal, Badami forms the cradle of Chalukyan temple architecture. MyTripMyTravel runs it as an escorted heritage circuit with expert guides and a comfortable chauffeured fleet across the three sites.

Badami is where Indian temple architecture found its feet. In the 6th century this was Vatapi, capital of the early Chalukyas, and the dynasty's sculptors treated the town's red sandstone gorge as a canvas, cutting four great cave temples directly into the living rock above a green tank called Agastya Lake.

The caves are the reason to come. Cave 1 is Shaivite, its verandah guarded by an eighteen-armed dancing Shiva; Caves 2 and 3 are Vaishnavite, the latter carrying a dated inscription of 578 CE and some of the finest early Chalukyan carving anywhere; Cave 4 is Jain. Across the lake, the Bhutanatha temple group sits half in the water, and sandstone forts crown the cliffs on either side of the ravine.

Badami is best understood as one point of a triangle. Twenty-two kilometres away, the temples of Pattadakal are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Aihole beyond is often called the laboratory of Indian temple form. MyTripMyTravel arranges the three as a single guided Chalukyan circuit, pacing the cave and fort climbs for the cooler hours and handling every transfer in an orthopedic-grade fleet.

When to visit

October to March

October to March brings the cooler, drier weather that makes the cave and fort climbs comfortable and the sandstone glow at its best in low light. March to May is punishingly hot on the exposed rock, often above 40°C, when only early morning sightseeing is sensible. The monsoon (June to September) fills Agastya Lake and greens the gorge, and can be atmospheric, though heavy rain occasionally interrupts the climbs and the wider Chalukyan circuit.
