Aina Mahal
The Hall of Mirrors of Kutch
Overview
The Aina Mahal ('Hall of Mirrors') is an 18th-century palace in Bhuj, Kutch, Gujarat, India, built during the reign of Rao Lakhpatji around the mid-1700s. Its interiors, mirrored walls, Venetian glass, gilding, and a fountain hall, were designed by the Kutchi craftsman Ram Singh Malam, who trained in Europe, fusing Indian and European styles. Part of the Darbargarh palace complex, it was damaged in the 2001 Bhuj earthquake and partially restored as a museum. MyTripMyTravel visits it with an expert guide alongside the adjacent Prag Mahal.
The Aina Mahal is one of India's most unusual royal interiors, a mid-18th-century pleasure palace where a Kutchi craftsman who had trained in Europe brought back Venetian glass, mirrors, chandeliers, and clockwork, and set them into an Indian palace. The result is a genuine East-meets-West room that exists almost nowhere else.
Its maker, Ram Singh Malam, spent years in Europe and returned to serve Rao Lakhpatji; the Fuvara Mahal 'hall of fountains', the mirrored walls, and the gilded pleasure chamber are his. The 2001 Gujarat earthquake badly damaged the palace, and what you see today is a proud, honest partial restoration rather than a pristine set, which is part of its story.
MyTripMyTravel visits the Aina Mahal within the Darbargarh, paired with the neighbouring Prag Mahal, escorted and guided so the craft, the trade history, and the earthquake recovery all read clearly.
