Chikmagalur

The Birthplace of Indian Coffee

Overview

Chikmagalur is a highland district in Karnataka on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats, celebrated as the birthplace of coffee in India, by legend, the Sufi saint Baba Budan planted the country's first coffee beans on the hills that still bear his name in the 17th century. It is home to Mullayanagiri, at 1,930 metres the highest peak in Karnataka, as well as the Bhadra tiger reserve and, nearby, the Hoysala temple towns of Belur and Halebidu. The nearest airport is Mangaluru. MyTripMyTravel runs Chikmagalur as a Western Ghats coffee-and-peaks retreat, estate stays, guided summit drives, and Malnad heritage dining.

Chikmagalur is where Indian coffee began. In the 17th century the saint Baba Budan is said to have carried seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them on the hills above the town, the range still called Baba Budangiri, and the district has been coffee country ever since.

It is also Karnataka's high country. Mullayanagiri, the state's tallest peak, rises to 1,930 metres above rolling estates, grasslands, and the shola forests of the Bhadra and Kudremukh reserves. Within reach sit Belur and Halebidu, whose 12th-century Hoysala temples carry some of the most intricate stone carving in India.

MyTripMyTravel treats Chikmagalur as a two-sided retreat: the slow pleasure of a working coffee estate, and the active draw of summit drives, waterfalls, and the Hoysala heritage circuit, all handled with a fleet built for the ghat roads and dining rooted in Malnad home cooking.

When to visit

September to March

September to March is prime Chikmagalur, with post-monsoon greenery, full waterfalls, and clear peaks for the Mullayanagiri drive. October to February brings cool, misty mornings ideal for estate stays. The monsoon (June to September) is heavy and dramatic, landslip-prone on the higher roads but beautiful on the estates. March to May is warm and marks the coffee-blossom season, when the hills turn fragrant and white.
