Chilika Lake
India's Largest Coastal Lagoon
Overview
Chilika Lake is a vast brackish-water lagoon on the east coast of Odisha, India, the largest coastal lagoon in the country and one of the largest in the world, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long sandy ridge. It is a Ramsar wetland of international importance and one of the subcontinent's greatest wintering grounds for migratory birds, with the Nalabana island bird sanctuary at its heart. Chilika is also home to a resident population of rare Irrawaddy dolphins, best sought from Satapada. As a working natural lagoon, dolphin and bird sightings are never guaranteed. MyTripMyTravel runs Chilika as a boat-based nature leg staged from Puri or Bhubaneswar.
Chilika is the great lagoon of the Odisha coast, a shimmering, pear-shaped sheet of brackish water spread across the Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam districts, its area swelling and shrinking with the seasons between roughly 900 and 1,100 square kilometres. A narrow mouth connects it to the Bay of Bengal, so its waters are neither fully fresh nor fully marine, and that mingling is the source of its extraordinary richness of life. It is important to be clear that Chilika is a lagoon, not an alpine lake: it is shallow, wide, and best experienced by boat.
In winter the lagoon becomes one of the most important migratory bird habitats on the Indian subcontinent, drawing enormous flocks from as far as Siberia, Central Asia, and the Himalayas to the reed island of Nalabana Bird Sanctuary at its centre. The other celebrated resident is the Irrawaddy dolphin, a rare, snub-nosed species best sought in the deeper channels near Satapada, where the lagoon meets the sea. Scattered across the water are small islands, among them the shrine of Kalijai, honoured in Odia folklore, and the working villages of fishing communities whose lives have turned on Chilika for centuries. Chilika is designated a Ramsar site of international importance, though it is not a UNESCO World Heritage property.
MyTripMyTravel runs Chilika as an unhurried, boat-based nature leg, staged from Puri or the state capital Bhubaneswar. Guests are given private motor-launch cruises with informed boatmen toward the dolphin channels and the bird island, briefed honestly that dolphins and birds are wild and can never be promised, and paired with the temple heritage of the Odisha coast for a fuller journey.
At a glance
Chilika Lake in brief
When to visit
November to February
November to February is the prime window, when the winter migration fills the lagoon with birds and the weather is cool and clear for long boat cruises, this is the season for Nalabana and the largest congregations. Dolphins can be sought year-round near Satapada, weather permitting. March to May is hot and humid, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and choppy water that can disrupt boating. For birds especially, plan the winter months.

Good to know
Chilika Lake, your questions
Is Chilika a lake or a lagoon?
Chilika is a brackish-water coastal lagoon, the largest in India, connected to the Bay of Bengal by a narrow mouth. Its water is a mix of fresh and marine, which is exactly what makes it so rich in birdlife and fisheries. It is shallow and wide, best explored by boat.
Will I definitely see dolphins at Chilika?
Chilika has a resident population of rare Irrawaddy dolphins, best sought near Satapada, and encounters are frequent in the right season, but these are wild animals in open water and no sighting can ever be guaranteed. We manage expectations honestly while giving you the best cruises.
When is the best time for birds at Chilika?
The winter months, roughly November to February, when migratory flocks arrive in huge numbers around the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary. This is also the most comfortable weather for long boat cruises across the lagoon.
How do I reach Chilika?
Satapada, the dolphin access point, is about 1.5 hours from Puri, while the western resort shore at Barkul and Rambha is around 2.5 hours from Bhubaneswar, the nearest airport. We arrange the fleet and all boat transfers.
How does Chilika fit an Odisha trip?
It pairs naturally with the temple coast, Puri's Jagannath temple, the Sun Temple at Konark, and the temples of Bhubaneswar, as the nature leg of a wider Odisha circuit, typically with one or two nights on the lagoon.
