Chitrakote Falls
The Niagara of India
Overview
Chitrakote Falls is a broad horseshoe-shaped waterfall on the Indravati river in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, central India, about 38 km west of Jagdalpur. Often called the 'Niagara of India', it is regarded as the widest waterfall in the country, spanning roughly 300 metres and dropping around 30 metres. Being monsoon-fed, its character changes dramatically with the seasons, a thunderous, muddy-brown torrent in the rains and a narrower blue-green cascade in winter. Boat rides run near the base in season, and full-moon nights are prized. MyTripMyTravel visits it as a scenic highlight of a Bastar journey.
Chitrakote Falls is central India's most spectacular waterfall, a wide, curving wall of water where the Indravati river spills over a horseshoe of rock in the heart of tribal Bastar. Its scale earns it the inevitable nickname 'the Niagara of India': at full flow it is the widest waterfall in the country, a sweeping crescent roughly 300 metres across.
The falls are entirely monsoon-fed, and this defines the experience. In the rains, from July into October, the Indravati swells and Chitrakote becomes a deafening, muddy-brown torrent, throwing up spray and mist across the gorge, the most powerful but least clear time to see it. As the dry season sets in, the river narrows and clears, breaking the horseshoe into separate blue-green ribbons that are gentler but far more photogenic, and small boats can be rowed toward the base for a closer view. On full-moon nights the cascade takes on a celebrated silvery glow, and a rainbow often hangs in the spray by day.
MyTripMyTravel visits Chitrakote as the scenic centrepiece of a Bastar itinerary, timed to the season and the light. Being honest about it matters: this is a monsoon-driven river, so its size and colour vary hugely through the year, and we plan the visit, whether for the winter's clarity or the post-monsoon volume, around what you most want to see, usually from a base at Jagdalpur.
At a glance
Chitrakote Falls in brief
When to visit
August to February
The falls are monsoon-fed, so timing shapes the whole experience. For sheer power, late in and just after the monsoon, roughly August to October, brings the Indravati in full spate and Chitrakote at its most thunderous, though the water runs muddy-brown and spray can obscure the view. For clarity and comfort, the cool November to February months break the flow into photogenic blue-green channels, allow boat rides near the base, and make the surroundings pleasant. April to June sees the flow shrink and can leave the falls much reduced before the rains return.

Chitrakote Falls, your questions
When is Chitrakote Falls at its best?
It depends on what you want. For raw power, late in and just after the monsoon (roughly August to October) gives the fullest, most thunderous flow, though the water is muddy. For clarity, calmer boat rides, and photogenic blue-green channels, the cool November to February months are ideal.
Why is it called the Niagara of India?
Because of its broad, horseshoe shape and width, at full flow it spans roughly 300 metres, making it the widest waterfall in India. The curving crescent genuinely recalls Niagara, hence the nickname.
Can I take a boat to the falls?
Yes, in the drier, calmer months small boats operate near the base, offering a memorable close-up view. During the monsoon the river is too powerful and boating is suspended for safety, so we plan boat rides for the winter season.
How do I visit Chitrakote?
Almost always as a day excursion from Jagdalpur, about 38 km and an hour away by road. We drive out with the fleet and often combine it with the Tirathgarh falls and caves or Bastar's markets and palace.
Does the waterfall ever dry up?
It never fully vanishes, but because it is monsoon-fed the flow shrinks markedly in the hot pre-monsoon months of April to June, when it can look much reduced. We are upfront about the season so your expectations match what you will see.
