Sé Cathedral
The Great Church of Old Goa
Overview
Sé Cathedral in Old Goa is one of the largest churches in Asia, raised by the Portuguese and dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria. Begun in 1562 and largely completed by 1619, its whitewashed Tuscan facade and vast vaulted interior speak to Goa's era as capital of Portuguese India. It is celebrated for its 'Golden Bell', among the largest in the region, and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Churches and Convents of Goa. MyTripMyTravel pairs it with the neighbouring Basilica of Bom Jesus on an unhurried heritage morning.
Sé Cathedral stands at the heart of Old Goa, once the thriving capital of Portugal's eastern empire. Its scale is deliberate: this was meant to be the mother church of a maritime dominion, and even today its long nave and lofty vault dwarf the visitors who cross the threshold.
The cathedral is dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria, on whose feast day Afonso de Albuquerque took Goa in 1510. Construction spanned decades, and the structure was largely finished by 1619. It originally had two bell towers, but one collapsed in the eighteenth century, leaving the single tower that houses the famous Golden Bell, prized for the depth of its toll.
MyTripMyTravel visits in the cooler morning light, when the plaza of Old Goa is quiet. We combine the cathedral with the Basilica of Bom Jesus a short walk away, so the full UNESCO ensemble is understood as one story rather than a series of separate stops.
