Indore
The Holkar City & Malwa's Gateway
Overview
Indore is the largest city of Madhya Pradesh and the commercial heart of the Malwa plateau in central India. Shaped by the Maratha Holkar dynasty, it is anchored by the seven-storey Rajwada palace and the Lal Bagh Palace, and is famous nationally for its street food, the Sarafa night bazaar and the Chhappan Dukan food street. Indore has repeatedly been ranked India's cleanest city under the Swachh Survekshan survey. It has its own airport (IDR) and is the natural base for Mandu, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar, and Ujjain. MyTripMyTravel uses Indore as a comfortable, well-connected gateway into Malwa.
Indore is not a monument city in the way Khajuraho or Orchha are, it is a living, prosperous, fast-moving place, and that is precisely its use. As the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and the commercial capital of the Malwa plateau, it offers the region's best flight connections, hotels, and hospitals, making it the sensible hub from which the great Malwa sites are reached.
Its own story belongs to the Holkars, the Maratha dynasty that rose here in the 18th century. Their legacy stands in the Rajwada, a tall seven-storey palace-gateway facing the old city, and in the more ornate Lal Bagh Palace on the outskirts. Indore is also, unmistakably, a food city: the Sarafa Bazaar transforms into a late-night street-food market, and the row of stalls known as Chhappan Dukan, the 'fifty-six shops', draws people for poha, jalebi, and Indori namkeen.
MyTripMyTravel runs Indore as an arrival-and-launch point rather than a long stay. A guided evening through the old city and its food streets, a look at the Holkar palaces, and then the chauffeured fleet carries you out to Mandu's ruins, Maheshwar's ghats, and the Narmada island of Omkareshwar.

Indore in brief
When to visit
October to March
October to March is the comfortable season for Indore and for the Malwa day trips it launches, with cool, clear days ideal for the old city, the palaces, and the food streets. The Diwali season lights the Rajwada dramatically. April to June brings strong central-India heat, though the city stays fully functional; the monsoon (July to September) is warm and wet but greens the surrounding plateau, and is, in fact, the loveliest time to pair Indore with nearby Mandu.

Indore, your questions
Why start a Malwa trip in Indore?
It has the region's best air links, hotels, and infrastructure, and sits within a couple of hours of Mandu, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar, and Ujjain, making it the natural, comfortable base for exploring the plateau.
Is Indore worth time in its own right?
For a day, yes. The Holkar palaces, the old city, and above all the street food give it real character, even though it is a modern commercial city rather than a monument town.
Is the street food safe for international travellers?
On our escorted trails we take you to established, high-turnover kitchens and stalls, which is the safest way to enjoy Indore's famous food. We tailor to dietary needs and sensitivities.
How do I reach Indore?
By flight into Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR), central India's busiest, or by train on the Delhi to Mumbai corridor. We coordinate fleet handover and every transfer.
How many nights do I need in Indore?
One to two. A single night covers the city and its food; a second lets you fold in a full Malwa day trip without compressing the pace.
