The Chandela Temples in Stone

Overview

Khajuraho is a temple town in Madhya Pradesh, central India, famous for the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Hindu and Jain temples built by the Chandela dynasty between roughly 950 and 1050 CE. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the surviving temples are celebrated for their soaring Nagara-style spires and dense stone sculpture, a small share of which is famously erotic. The largest, the Kandariya Mahadeva, anchors the Western Group. Khajuraho lies about 175 km from Jhansi and has its own airport (HJR). MyTripMyTravel runs Khajuraho as an unhurried heritage mission, early escorted temple access, a resident art historian, and Bundelkhandi dining.

Khajuraho is what remains of one of medieval India's great building campaigns. Of an estimated eighty-five temples raised by the Chandela kings between the 10th and 11th centuries, around twenty-five survive, and they survive largely because the site was abandoned to the forest, forgotten, and only rediscovered by the outside world in the 19th century. Isolation preserved them.

The temples divide into three clusters. The Western Group is the masterpiece: the Kandariya Mahadeva, Lakshmana, and Vishvanatha temples rise on high platforms, their sandstone flanks carved in tiered bands of gods, dancers, musicians, animals, and the erotic couples that made Khajuraho notorious, though those panels are a fraction of a far larger iconographic program about life, cosmos, and the divine. The Eastern Group holds the Jain temples, including the Parsvanatha; the Southern Group adds the Duladeo and Chaturbhuj.

Most visitors rush Khajuraho in a morning and miss the point. The sculpture rewards slow, guided reading, knowing what you are looking at transforms the visit. MyTripMyTravel times the temples for soft early light, pairs them with an art historian who can decode the panels, and stages the surrounding Bundelkhand, Raneh Falls, Panna, the old town, so the temples are a study rather than a photo stop.

When to visit

October to March

The clear, cool window from October to March is ideal for Khajuraho, with comfortable daytime temperatures for extended temple walks and low, warm light that flatters the sandstone. The Khajuraho Dance Festival, held on the temple grounds in February, brings classical dance against a floodlit backdrop and is a highlight worth timing for, book well ahead. April to June is severe central-India heat; the monsoon (July to September) greens the setting dramatically but can be humid and wet.

Good to know

Khajuraho, your questions

How long do I need at Khajuraho?

One full, well-guided day covers the Western and Eastern groups without rushing. An overnight lets you catch the temples in both morning and evening light and add Raneh Falls or Panna, which is how we build the leg.

Are the erotic sculptures the main attraction?

They are the most famous element but a small fraction of the carving. The temples are a vast program of gods, dancers, daily life, and cosmology, a guided reading reveals far more than the well-known panels.

Is Khajuraho suitable for a heritage-focused trip?

Very much so. It is one of India's finest concentrations of temple sculpture and pairs naturally with Orchha and Gwalior for a central-India heritage circuit.

How do I reach Khajuraho?

By seasonal flight into Khajuraho (HJR), or by our chauffeured fleet from Orchha and Jhansi in about 4 hours. We coordinate whichever suits your wider itinerary.

Is there a wildlife option nearby?

Yes. Panna Tiger Reserve and the Ken river canyon at Raneh Falls are within easy reach, letting us combine temples with a short nature leg.

When is the Khajuraho Dance Festival?

It is held in February on the temple grounds, with classical dance performed against the floodlit Western Group. Demand is high, so we secure stays and access well in advance.
