Kolhapur

City of the Mahalakshmi and the Maratha Legacy

Overview

Kolhapur is a historic city in southern Maharashtra, on the Panchganga river, long ruled by a princely Maratha dynasty and shaped by the reformer Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. Its spiritual heart is the ancient Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) temple, revered as one of the Shakti Peethas. The city gives its name to Kolhapuri chappals, GI-tagged handcrafted leather sandals, and to a fiery regional cuisine of tambda and pandhra rassa. The Indo-Saracenic New Palace, Rankala Lake, and the nearby Panhala Fort round out its heritage, alongside a living tradition of kushti wrestling. MyTripMyTravel runs Kolhapur as a heritage, temple, and cuisine leg.

Kolhapur wears its history with confidence. A princely capital of the Marathas, it was ruled into the modern era by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, a genuinely progressive king who championed education and social reform for the marginalised in the early twentieth century, and that legacy of pride and independence still runs through the city's character.

At its centre stands the Mahalakshmi, or Ambabai, temple, an ancient Shakti Peetha with roots in the Chalukya era, one of the most revered goddess shrines in western India and a place of constant devotion. The city's royal past shows in the Indo-Saracenic New Palace, built in the 1880s to a design by Charles Mant and now a museum, and in Rankala Lake, laid out as a public promenade. Above the plains nearby rises Panhala, one of the largest hill-forts in the Deccan and a stronghold woven into Shivaji's story.

Then there is Kolhapur's everyday fame, its crafts and its food. The handmade Kolhapuri chappal, a GI-tagged leather sandal, and the ornate Kolhapuri saaj necklace are made here, and the city's kitchens are known across India for their fierce, full-flavoured cooking: the red tambda rassa and white pandhra rassa mutton curries, and a spicy Kolhapuri misal. The tradition of kushti wrestling, trained in red-earth akhadas, still thrives. MyTripMyTravel runs Kolhapur as a rounded heritage, temple, and cuisine leg on the road between Pune and the Konkan or Goa.

When to visit

October to March

October to March offers the most comfortable weather for the temple, palaces, and Panhala Fort, with cool, clear days. The Navratri festival in the autumn is the temple's greatest occasion, when the Mahalakshmi shrine draws vast, fervent crowds. April to June is hot on the southern Deccan. The monsoon (June to September) greens the surrounding hills and forts dramatically but brings heavy rain, so we keep those itineraries flexible around the weather.

Good to know

Kolhapur, your questions

How many days do I need in Kolhapur?

One to two nights covers the Mahalakshmi temple, the New Palace, Rankala Lake, and a Panhala Fort excursion, with time for the crafts and cuisine.

What should I know about visiting the Mahalakshmi temple?

It is an active, deeply revered Shakti Peetha, so modest dress and patience with queues are expected, and crowds swell greatly during Navratri. Our escort manages timing and etiquette.

Is Kolhapuri food really that spicy?

It can be, the tambda rassa and Kolhapuri misal are genuinely fiery. We can arrange milder versions and pair the meal with the soothing pandhra rassa, so the flavour comes through without overwhelming.

Are Kolhapuri chappals worth buying here?

Yes, the handmade leather Kolhapuri chappal carries a Geographical Indication tag, and buying from the city's genuine workshops means quality and authenticity. We can arrange visits to trusted makers.

Is Panhala Fort worth the trip?

Very much, it is one of the largest and most historically important hill-forts in the Deccan, tied to Shivaji's story, about 20 km from the city and an easy half-day.

Can Kolhapur be combined with Goa?

Yes. It sits on the road south toward Goa and the Konkan coast, and pairs naturally with Pune and Mahabaleshwar on a wider western-India itinerary.
