Kolkata

The Cultural Capital of India

Overview

Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is the capital of West Bengal, set on the east bank of the Hooghly river in eastern India. It was the capital of British India until 1911 and remains the country's foremost centre of literature, art, cinema, and intellectual life. Its landmarks include the marble Victoria Memorial, the cantilever Howrah Bridge, and the Indian Museum, the oldest and largest in the country. Kolkata's Durga Puja is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, and its Bengali cuisine is celebrated nationwide. MyTripMyTravel runs Kolkata as a cultural and culinary gateway to East India, with heritage walks, chauffeured touring, and refined Bengali dining.

Kolkata is India's intellectual and artistic capital, a city that wears its history openly. For a century and a half it was the seat of British India, and the grand colonial architecture along its avenues still frames a public life devoted to books, theatre, football, addas over endless cups of tea, and the fiercely held identity of Bengal.

The Victoria Memorial, a vast domed monument in white Makrana marble set in landscaped gardens, is the emblematic image of the city. Across town the Howrah Bridge, a cantilever span carrying a torrent of humanity over the Hooghly, is its working icon. Between them lie the Indian Museum, the old European quarter around Dalhousie, the book stalls of College Street, the idol-makers' lanes of Kumartuli, and riverside temples at Dakshineswar and Kalighat.

MyTripMyTravel runs Kolkata as the cultural front door to East India. Guests are walked through the colonial core and the living neighbourhoods with a knowledgeable escort, timed where possible for the extraordinary theatre of Durga Puja, and introduced to a Bengali table that ranges from street kathi rolls and puchka to refined fish and sweet traditions found nowhere else.

When to visit

October to March

The pleasant, drier season from October to March is by far the best time to visit, with comfortable days for walking the city. October is the peak of Durga Puja, when Kolkata transforms into an open-air gallery of illuminated pandals and processions, spectacular but heavily booked. April to June brings oppressive heat and humidity, and the monsoon from June to September is warm and wet. For touring and the great festivals, the winter window is optimal.

Good to know

Kolkata, your questions

How many days should I spend in Kolkata?

Two nights allow a full colonial-heritage day and a second for the markets, temples, and food culture. Add a day if your visit falls during Durga Puja, when the city itself becomes the attraction.

When is Durga Puja?

Durga Puja usually falls in September or October. It is the city's greatest festival, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage; demand is very high, so we book stays and touring well ahead.

Is Kolkata a good base for East India?

Yes. Kolkata is the region's main air and rail gateway and the natural staging point for onward travel to Darjeeling, Puri, and beyond, which our missions arrange by fleet and rail.

What food is Kolkata famous for?

Bengali cuisine, freshwater fish curries, kathi rolls, puchka, and an unrivalled sweet tradition of rosogolla and sandesh. We run an escorted trail through both street kitchens and refined tables.

Is Kolkata easy to get around?

With our chauffeured fleet and an escort, yes. We handle navigation, parking, and crowd management so guests can focus on the neighbourhoods, museums, and river.

What is the best area to stay?

The Park Street and Maidan area places you near the Victoria Memorial, museums, and dining, while the southern neighbourhoods are quieter and leafier. We match the choice to your itinerary.
