Lepakshi

Vijayanagara Temple of the Hanging Pillar

Overview

Lepakshi is a village in Andhra Pradesh's Sri Sathya Sai (formerly Anantapur) district, close to the Karnataka border, celebrated for its 16th-century Veerabhadra Temple, a masterwork of Vijayanagara art. The temple is famed for a 'hanging pillar' that barely touches the ground, for some of the finest surviving Vijayanagara ceiling frescoes, and for an unfinished Kalyana Mandapa. Nearby stands a huge monolithic Nandi bull, among the largest in India. The village is tied to the Ramayana legend of the wounded bird Jatayu. About 120 km from Bengaluru, MyTripMyTravel runs Lepakshi as an escorted art-and-heritage day.

Lepakshi is a small village with an outsized place in the history of Indian art. Just inside Andhra Pradesh near the Karnataka border, it holds the Veerabhadra Temple, built in the 1530s during the Vijayanagara period and reputedly funded by the brothers Virupanna and Viranna, and it is one of the great surviving showcases of that empire's sculpture and painting.

The temple is a catalogue of marvels. Its most famous feature is the 'hanging pillar,' one of many carved columns that does not quite rest on the floor, a feat of engineering that visitors test by passing objects beneath it. Overhead survive some of the finest Vijayanagara ceiling frescoes in existence, including a vast image of Veerabhadra, while the incomplete Kalyana Mandapa, said to have been abandoned mid-construction, stands as an open-air gallery of unfinished carving. A short walk away lies an enormous monolithic Nandi bull, cut from a single granite boulder and among the largest in the country.

Lepakshi's name carries a legend: it is linked to the Ramayana episode of Jatayu, the bird wounded trying to save Sita, whom Rama is said to have addressed with the Telugu words 'Le Pakshi', 'rise, bird.' MyTripMyTravel runs Lepakshi as an unhurried, expertly guided day of close looking, easily reached from Bengaluru about 120 km away and combined with the wider Rayalaseema and Deccan heritage circuit.

When to visit

October to February

October to February brings the cooler, drier weather ideal for visiting the temple and the open-air Nandi, with soft light that suits the sculpture and frescoes. March to June is hot on this inland Deccan border country, so a visit is best timed for the morning. The temple is under cover in its main halls, so much of the viewing is comfortable year-round, but the wider heritage touring is most pleasant in the cool season.
