Meenakshi Amman Temple
The Painted Temple-City of Madurai
Overview
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is a vast Dravidian temple complex in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, on the south bank of the Vaigai river, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi (a form of Parvati) and her consort Sundareswarar (a form of Shiva). Its present form was largely built under the Nayak rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries, though the site is far older. Fourteen soaring gopurams, the tallest about 52 metres, are covered in thousands of vividly painted stucco figures. It remains one of India's most active temples. MyTripMyTravel arranges an escorted visit timed around the sanctum's hours and evening rituals.
Meenakshi is not a monument you observe so much as a living organism you enter. Behind the towering painted gopurams lies a working temple-city of fourteen gateways, pillared halls, shrines and tanks, alive with pilgrims, priests, musicians and, on festival days, temple elephants. It is among the busiest active temples in India.
The present complex is largely the achievement of the Nayak rulers who rebuilt Madurai around it in the 16th and 17th centuries, after earlier destruction. The riot of colour on the gopurams, tens of thousands of sculpted figures repainted in cycles, together with the Thousand Pillar Hall and the golden-lotus tank reward slow, guided reading rather than a quick loop.
MyTripMyTravel runs Meenakshi with an expert guide who navigates the split sanctum timings and the crowd, and who can align your visit with the evening ritual when the image of Sundareswarar is carried in procession to Meenakshi's shrine.

Visitor information
Our tips
Time your visit to the evening procession, it is the temple at its most alive.
Dress modestly and be ready to leave footwear, and often phones, at the entrance; our escort manages this.
Non-Hindus are welcome across the complex but not the two inner sanctums, an expert guide makes the halls, tanks and gopurams just as rewarding.
Go early or after the evening reopening; the midday reopening brings the biggest crowds onto hot granite floors.
Good to know
Meenakshi Amman Temple, your questions
Who is the Meenakshi temple dedicated to?
The goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva, their twin sanctums sit at the centre of the complex.
Can non-Hindus enter?
Yes, into most of the complex, but not the two innermost sanctums. There is a great deal to see in the halls, tanks and gopurams regardless, and our guide makes sense of it.
Is it open all day?
No, like many South Indian temples it closes at midday, running roughly 5 am to 12:30 pm and 4 to 9:30 pm. We plan around that.
Can I take photographs?
Cameras and often phones are restricted inside and prohibited in the inner sanctums; we advise what is permitted before you enter.
How long should I spend?
About 1.5 to 2 hours with a guide for the gopurams, the Thousand Pillar Hall and the sacred tank.
