Melukote

A Sri Vaishnava hill town of Ramanuja's legacy

Overview

Melukote is a hilltop temple town in Karnataka's Mandya district and a major centre of Sri Vaishnava tradition, closely associated with the philosopher Ramanuja. Its principal shrine is the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple in the town, while the Yoga Narasimha Temple crowns the hill above. Melukote is known for the Vairamudi festival and for its Sanskrit scholarship, home to the Academy of Sanskrit Research. MTMT arranges quiet, guide-led visits here as a contemplative counterpoint to Mysore, with respect for the town's living devotional life.

Melukote sits on rocky hills in Mandya district, north of Mysore, a town whose stepped tanks, temple towers and granite outcrops give it a timeless air. It is one of the most important centres of the Sri Vaishnava tradition in the south, and its history is bound up with the great eleventh- and twelfth-century philosopher Ramanuja, who is said to have spent years here.

Two temples define the town. In its heart is the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, dedicated to a form of Vishnu, a focus of devotion and of the famous Vairamudi festival, when the deity is adorned with a diamond crown. High above, reached by a climb of steps, stands the Yoga Narasimha Temple, from which the surrounding country falls away in every direction.

Melukote is also a seat of learning, home to the Academy of Sanskrit Research, and a stronghold of Iyengar culture and cuisine. It rewards travellers who come quietly, ready to climb a little and to move respectfully through a place where worship is very much alive.

When to visit

October to March

The cooler, drier months from October to March make the hilltop climb to the Yoga Narasimha Temple far more comfortable and offer clear views over the surrounding country. Summers are hot on the exposed rock, and the monsoon can be slippery underfoot. Festival times such as Vairamudi are atmospheric but very crowded, so plan accordingly if you visit then.
