Palampur

The Tea Capital Beneath the Dhauladhar

Overview

Palampur is a town in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India, set at roughly 1,220 m against the snow wall of the Dhauladhar range and long known as the tea capital of north-west India. Its cool, watered slopes carry the green terraces of Kangra tea, threaded by streams such as the Neugal Khad and Bundla. Nearby lie the artists' village of Andretta, the Tibetan monastery of Tashi Jong, and the ancient Baijnath Shiva temple. MyTripMyTravel runs Palampur as a restorative Kangra-valley base, tea-garden walks with the Dhauladhar behind them, an unhurried heritage and art circuit, and easy day links to Bir Billing and Dharamshala.

Palampur is where the Kangra valley is at its greenest. At about 1,220 m, the town sits on watered, gently sloping ground directly beneath the Dhauladhar range, whose snow peaks rise so abruptly behind the tea gardens that the contrast, bright green terraces against white rock, is the image most visitors carry away. It has been called the tea capital of north-west India for good reason: Kangra tea has grown here since colonial times.

The pleasures are gentle and cultural. Streams such as the Neugal Khad and Bundla cut through the town; the artists' village of Andretta, home historically to the painter Sobha Singh and the Norah Richards theatre circle, keeps a studio-and-pottery tradition alive nearby; the Tibetan monastery at Tashi Jong and the very old Baijnath temple to Shiva add depth within easy reach. It is a place for walking, tea, and slow looking rather than for ticking off monuments.

MyTripMyTravel uses Palampur as a restful hub in the Kangra circuit. We base guests among the tea gardens with the Dhauladhar in view, arrange escorted estate and art-village visits, and use the town's easy road links to fold in nearby Bir Billing, Dharamshala, and McLeod Ganj without long transfers. It suits travellers who want the Himalaya's calm and colour without altitude or exertion.

When to visit

March to June, September to November

Spring to early summer (March to June) is delightful, with the tea gardens flushing green and comfortable days; autumn (September to November) brings the clearest air and the sharpest Dhauladhar views after the rains. The monsoon (July to August) is heavy here, Palampur is one of Himachal's wetter towns, which greens everything spectacularly but limits mountain views and outdoor plans. Winter (December to February) is cold and crisp with occasional snow on the peaks, atmospheric but chilly for garden walks.

Good to know

Palampur, your questions

Why is Palampur called the tea capital?

The cool, high-rainfall Kangra valley around Palampur has grown tea since the colonial era, and the town remains the centre of Kangra tea production, hence its long-standing description as the tea capital of north-west India. Estate walks and tastings are a highlight of any visit.

How does Palampur compare with Dharamshala?

Palampur is lower, greener, and far quieter, more tea gardens and countryside than town. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, about 35 km away, are livelier and more Tibetan in character. Many of our guests base restfully in Palampur and day-trip to both.

Is Palampur good for a relaxed, low-altitude trip?

Yes. At around 1,220 m there are no altitude concerns, and the pleasures, tea walks, art villages, temples, and mountain views, are gentle and unhurried. It suits families and travellers who want the Himalaya's calm without exertion.

When are the Dhauladhar views best?

After the monsoon, from September to November, the air is clearest and the snow peaks sharpest; spring is also fine. During the heavy July to August monsoon the peaks are often hidden behind cloud, though the valley is at its greenest.
