Panchgani
Table Land of the Five Hills
Overview
Panchgani is a hill station in Maharashtra's Satara district, set at around 1,290 m in the Sahyadri range and named for the five hills that ring it. Its defining feature is Table Land, an immense flat laterite plateau, one of the largest such mountain plateaus in Asia, with wide views over the Krishna river valley and the Dhom Dam. Developed by the British in the 1860s as a sanatorium and school town, it is famous for its old boarding schools and the strawberries grown across the surrounding Mahabaleshwar to Panchgani belt. MyTripMyTravel runs it as a cool, unhurried Sahyadri escape, easily paired with Mahabaleshwar.
Panchgani takes its name, 'five hills', from the ring of summits that cradles it, and its character from the great flat plateau at its heart. Table Land is a vast sheet of exposed laterite, often described as one of the largest mountain plateaus in Asia, and standing on it, with the Krishna valley falling away on one side and the Dhom Dam glinting below, is the essential Panchgani experience. At roughly 1,290 metres, the air stays cool and clear through most of the year.
The town was shaped by the British in the 1860s, when it was developed as a health resort and, crucially, a schooling station, the temperate climate made it a favoured home for boarding schools, several of which still run today and give Panchgani its distinctive, tree-lined, institutional calm. Around it lie the classic hill-station viewpoints: Sydney Point looking toward the Krishna and Dhom Dam, Parsi Point over the valley, and the wind-carved hollow known as Devil's Kitchen, tied by legend to the Pandavas.
The whole Mahabaleshwar to Panchgani belt is India's strawberry country, its slopes terraced with berry farms that supply much of the nation's crop, and roadside stalls heaped with strawberries and cream are part of the ritual. MyTripMyTravel runs Panchgani as an easy, restorative Sahyadri leg, chauffeured ghat drives, well-timed viewpoint circuits, and a natural pairing with neighbouring Mahabaleshwar just up the road.

Panchgani in brief
When to visit
October to May
October to May is the reliable season, with cool, clear air, open valley views, and the strawberry harvest peaking roughly from December to March. Winter (November to February) is crisp and pleasant, the finest time for the plateau and viewpoints. The southwest monsoon (June to September) turns the hills lush and misty and is atmospheric, but heavy rain and low cloud can close the views and make Table Land slippery, so we keep those itineraries flexible. Summer stays comfortably mild at altitude.

Good to know
Panchgani, your questions
What is Table Land?
It is a vast, flat laterite plateau above Panchgani, often cited as one of the largest mountain plateaus in Asia. You can walk or take a horse across it for panoramic views over the Krishna valley and the Dhom Dam, and it holds formations like Devil's Kitchen.
Should I combine Panchgani with Mahabaleshwar?
Almost always. Mahabaleshwar is only about 19 km away, up the same ghat, and the two hill stations share the strawberry belt and the Sahyadri viewpoints. Most itineraries treat them as a single, unhurried cool-climate leg.
When is strawberry season?
Roughly December to March, peaking in the cool months, when the Mahabaleshwar to Panchgani farms supply much of India's crop. Strawberries and cream at a hillside farm is one of the region's simple pleasures.
Is the monsoon a good time to visit?
It is lush and atmospheric, but heavy rain and mist frequently close the viewpoints and make Table Land slippery. We keep monsoon plans flexible; October to May is more reliable for clear views.
How do I get there?
By a scenic three-hour chauffeured drive from Pune, or from Mumbai for international arrivals, up the Sahyadri ghats. The nearest airport is Pune (PNQ).
