Pemayangtse Monastery
The 'Perfect Sublime Lotus' Above Pelling
Overview
Pemayangtse Monastery is one of Sikkim's oldest and most important Buddhist monasteries, set above Pelling in West Sikkim. Belonging to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, it was founded in the early 18th century and enlarged to its present form around 1705; its name means 'Perfect Sublime Lotus'. Reserved historically for monks of pure lineage (ta-tshang), it houses an extraordinary seven-tiered wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's celestial palace, the Zangdok Palri. It commands Himalayan views toward Kanchenjunga. MyTripMyTravel pairs it with the nearby ruins of Rabdentse, Sikkim's former capital.
Pemayangtse is one of the premier monasteries of Sikkim and a spiritual anchor of the Nyingma order, the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism. Its name translates as 'Perfect Sublime Lotus', and it was traditionally the monastery whose head lama consecrated the Chogyal, the king of Sikkim.
Founded in the early 18th century and developed to its present three-storeyed form around 1705, it was reserved for ta-tshang, monks of pure Tibetan lineage. Its top floor holds its most remarkable treasure: the Zangdok Palri, a seven-tiered wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's heavenly palace, carved single-handedly over years by one devoted lama.
MyTripMyTravel visits in the calm of the morning, pairs it with the ruined former Sikkimese capital of Rabdentse a short walk away, and times the Kanchenjunga views that open from the ridge.
