City of the Sacred Confluence

Overview

Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is a historic city in Uttar Pradesh, India, at the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. It is the principal host of the Kumbh Mela, among the largest human gatherings on earth, most recently the Maha Kumbh of 2025. The city's heritage spans Akbar's riverside Allahabad Fort, the Mughal tombs of Khusro Bagh, the Gothic All Saints Cathedral, and Anand Bhavan, ancestral home of the Nehru family. MyTripMyTravel operates Prayagraj as a spiritual-and-heritage circuit with private Sangam boat access and expert guiding.

Prayagraj is defined by water. At the Triveni Sangam, the green Yamuna meets the paler Ganga, and Hindu tradition holds that the unseen Saraswati joins them here as well, making the confluence one of the holiest bathing places in the country. A boat out to the meeting of the rivers, watched over by pilgrims and gulls, is the essential Prayagraj experience.

It is also the great city of the Kumbh Mela. On a rotating cycle, tens of millions gather on these river sands for a mass pilgrimage that has no equal in scale; Prayagraj hosted the Maha Kumbh in 2025, and the annual Magh Mela draws pilgrims to the Sangam each winter in the years between. The result is a place layered with devotion, ritual, and extraordinary human density.

Around the rivers lies a rich civic history. Akbar built the vast Allahabad Fort above the confluence; the Mughal garden-tombs of Khusro Bagh, the Gothic All Saints Cathedral, and Anand Bhavan, the Nehru family home that became a crucible of the independence movement, trace the city through empire and nationhood. MyTripMyTravel weaves the sacred and the historic into one considered, well-paced circuit.

When to visit

October to March

October to March brings cool, pleasant weather ideal for a Sangam boat ride and heritage sightseeing. The annual Magh Mela unfolds on the sands each winter, and the far larger Kumbh and Maha Kumbh occur on their fixed cycle, spectacular but overwhelmingly crowded, requiring long-lead planning. April to June is severe heat, often above 40°C, and the monsoon from July to September swells the rivers and can flood the low-lying confluence. The winter months are the most comfortable and photogenic.
