Rann of Kutch

The White Desert of Gujarat

Overview

The Great Rann of Kutch is a vast seasonal salt marsh in the Thar Desert of western Gujarat, one of the largest salt deserts on earth. Through the monsoon it floods with seawater; by winter it dries into a blinding white crust that stretches unbroken to the horizon. The season is everything: the white desert and the Rann Utsav tent-city festival at Dhordo run roughly November to March, peaking on full-moon nights. MyTripMyTravel operates the Rann as a seasonal desert leg, luxury tented stays, Kala Dungar sunset drives, and visits to the Ajrakh, bandhani, and embroidery craft villages of Kutch.

The Great Rann of Kutch is one of the strangest and most beautiful landscapes in India, a flat, seasonal salt marsh so vast and white it dissolves the line between earth and sky. It is not a permanent desert but a tidal one: seawater floods it during the monsoon, and as the water evaporates through winter it leaves behind a hard, cracked crust of salt that shines under the sun and glows under the moon.

Everything here turns on season and timing. From roughly November to March the crust is walkable and the Gujarat government stages the Rann Utsav, a full tent city at Dhordo, near the border, with cultural performances and craft stalls. The best nights are around the full moon, when the white desert becomes luminous. Beyond the salt lie Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch and its finest viewpoint, and a belt of craft villages practising Ajrakh block printing, bandhani tie-dye, Rogan art, and mirror embroidery.

MyTripMyTravel runs the Rann honestly and precisely, because outside the November-to-March window there is often only water and mud, not white desert. We time stays to the season and the moon, base guests in luxury tented camps, run the Kala Dungar sunset and border viewpoints, and route the craft-village visits through genuine artisan workshops rather than showrooms.

When to visit

November to February

The white desert is a seasonal phenomenon, it is genuinely visible only after the monsoon water evaporates, roughly November to March, which is also when the Rann Utsav tent city operates at Dhordo. Within that window, the nights around the full moon are the most spectacular, when the salt flats glow silver. December and January are cold at night and need warm layers. From April the heat becomes extreme, and through the monsoon (July to September) the Rann is under water and the festival is closed.

Good to know

Rann of Kutch, your questions

When can I actually see the white desert?

The salt flats are white and walkable only after the monsoon water dries, roughly November to March. Outside that window the Rann is often water or mud, so we plan visits strictly within the season.

What is Rann Utsav?

A seasonal government-run festival, a full tent city at Dhordo with Kutchi music, dance, crafts, and camel rides, held through the winter months on the edge of the white desert. We arrange premium tent stays and access.

Is the full moon really better?

Yes. Around the full moon the salt crust reflects the light and glows silver across the horizon, the most memorable time to be there. We time itineraries to the lunar calendar where possible.

Do I need a permit for the Rann?

Yes. Because the white desert sits near the international border, visitors pass a checkpoint and need a permit, which our team arranges as part of the logistics.

Where do I base myself?

Most guests stay in luxury tents near Dhordo during the season, or in a boutique desert resort, with Bhuj as an alternative base for the craft villages. We match the base to your dates and interests.

What are the Kutch craft villages worth seeing?

Nirona for Rogan art and copper bells, Ajrakhpur for block printing, Bhujodi for weaving, and Hodka for embroidery, all working artisan communities we visit directly rather than through showrooms.
