Shivanasamudra

The Cauvery's twin cascades on a river island

Overview

Shivanasamudra is a river island in Karnataka's Mandya district where the Cauvery divides into two arms and drops in the segmented Gaganachukki and Bharachukki waterfalls. It is also the site of one of Asia's earliest hydroelectric power stations, commissioned in 1902 to supply the Kolar Gold Fields. The falls are monsoon-fed, so their volume is strongly seasonal and thin before the rains. MTMT arranges a chauffeured day from Mysuru or Bengaluru with viewpoint stops and a heritage lunch on the way.

Shivanasamudra (also spelt Sivasamudram) sits on an island in the Cauvery river between Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts, a couple of hours from Mysuru. Here the river splits around the island and tumbles over rocky ledges in two separate falls: Gaganachukki to the west and Bharachukki to the east, each reached by a different approach road.

The gorge below the falls holds a piece of engineering history. The Shivanasamudra hydroelectric station, commissioned in 1902, was among the first in Asia and famously transmitted power over a long distance to the gold mines at Kolar. The plant still operates within a restricted zone, so visitors experience the falls from designated viewpoints rather than the powerhouse itself.

Because the cascades depend entirely on the Cauvery's flow, timing matters. After a good southwest monsoon the falls are broad and thunderous; in the dry pre-monsoon months they narrow considerably, which is worth planning around.

When to visit

August to January

The falls are at their most dramatic once the southwest monsoon has filled the Cauvery, roughly from August into the post-monsoon months. Flow can stay strong into December and January depending on the season's rainfall and upstream releases. The pre-monsoon stretch from March to May tends to be hot and the cascades much thinner, so we generally steer visits toward the high-water window.

Good to know

Shivanasamudra, your questions

Are Gaganachukki and Bharachukki the same waterfall?

No. They are two separate segments of the Cauvery around the same island, reached by different roads. Gaganachukki lies to the west and Bharachukki to the east, and seeing both means a short drive between them.

When is the best time to see the falls flowing fully?

After the southwest monsoon, roughly August through January, when the Cauvery is high. In the dry pre-monsoon months the falls narrow substantially, so we plan visits around the water level.

Can I visit the historic power station?

The 1902 hydroelectric plant is an operational, restricted facility, so you cannot tour the powerhouse itself. You can appreciate its setting and history from the public viewpoints above the gorge.

Is it possible to go down to the water?

At Bharachukki, steps lead toward the base and coracle rides sometimes operate, but this depends on the season and safety conditions. During high flow, access below the falls is often closed for safety.

How far is it from Mysuru or Bengaluru?

The falls are about 80 km from Mysuru and roughly 130 km from Bengaluru. Most guests visit as a day trip, and MTMT arranges the drive with a chauffeur and viewpoint stops.
