Daria Daulat Bagh

Tipu Sultan's Muralled Summer Palace in the Garden

Overview

Daria Daulat Bagh is Tipu Sultan's summer palace at Srirangapatna, built around 1784 largely of teak in an ornate Indo-Islamic style. Set within formal gardens, its glory is the painted decoration covering the walls, including a celebrated mural of the Battle of Pollilur. The building today serves as a museum of Tipu-era paintings, prints and relics, and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. It sits close to the fort and Gumbaz on Srirangapatna island. MyTripMyTravel includes it on a private Srirangapatna circuit tracing Tipu Sultan's story.

Srirangapatna, an island in the Cauvery, was the seat of Tipu Sultan, and Daria Daulat Bagh, 'garden of the wealth of the sea', was his summer retreat. Built around 1784, the palace is largely of teak, with deep verandahs and arcaded facades in an ornamental Indo-Islamic idiom that favoured colour over stone grandeur.

The interiors and outer walls are the reason to come. Painted panels cover almost every surface, most famously a long mural depicting the Battle of Pollilur, in which forces led by Hyder Ali and Tipu defeated a British force. Other panels show processions, courts and portraits, offering a vivid picture of the period.

The palace now functions as an ASI museum, displaying paintings, prints, coins and objects connected with Tipu. The surrounding char-bagh gardens make an easy, shaded stroll, and the site combines naturally with the nearby Gumbaz and the ruined fort.
