Tawang

The High Monastery of the Eastern Himalaya

Overview

Tawang is a high-altitude town in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh, India, set at around 3,000 metres near the borders with Bhutan and China. It is the site of Tawang Monastery, founded in the 17th century, the largest Buddhist monastery in India and among the largest in the world, belonging to the Gelugpa school, and closely tied to the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Reaching it requires an Inner Line Permit (a Protected Area Permit for foreigners) and a long, demanding mountain drive over the 4,170-metre Sela Pass. It is genuine high-altitude Himalaya. MyTripMyTravel runs Tawang as an expert-led mountain expedition staged from Guwahati or Tezpur.

Tawang is one of the great destinations of the eastern Himalaya, and one of the hardest-won. It lies in the remote north-western corner of Arunachal Pradesh, close to where India meets Bhutan and China, in a landscape of snow peaks, high passes, and alpine lakes. This is Monpa country, culturally and spiritually part of the Tibetan Buddhist world, and its centre of gravity is the Tawang Monastery, Galden Namgey Lhatse, founded in the 17th century and reckoned the largest monastery in India and one of the largest in the world. It is a working Gelugpa institution, home to monks, a great gilded Buddha, and priceless manuscripts, and it stands close to Urgelling, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.

Getting to Tawang is a serious undertaking, and we say so plainly. Two things must be understood before planning. First, Tawang requires a permit: Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, arranged in advance. Second, the journey is a long, high, and demanding mountain drive, typically two days from the plains via Bhalukpong and Bomdila, climbing over the Sela Pass at around 4,170 metres before descending to the town at roughly 3,000 metres. The recently opened Sela Tunnel has eased the crossing, but this remains genuine high-altitude travel on winding mountain roads, and guests should be prepared for the altitude and the effort.

The rewards are commensurate. Beyond the monastery lie the sombre Tawang War Memorial to the 1962 conflict, the plunging Nuranang (Jang) Falls, and the still, high waters of Sungetsar (Madhuri) Lake amid the peaks. MyTripMyTravel runs Tawang as an expert-led mountain expedition, staged from Guwahati or Tezpur, with permits handled, altitude-aware pacing built into the itinerary, hill-capable vehicles and seasoned mountain chauffeurs, and honest planning around the weather, which can close the passes in winter.

When to visit

March to October

The best months are roughly March to October, when the mountain roads and the Sela Pass are most reliably open and the high country is at its most beautiful, spring rhododendrons and clear summer-to-autumn skies. Winter, from November to February, brings heavy snow: the passes can close, the cold at altitude is severe, and access becomes uncertain, though the snow-clad monastery is magnificent when the roads permit. We plan strictly around the season and the pass conditions, which shift year to year.

Tawang, your questions

Do I need a permit to visit Tawang?

Yes. Tawang is in Arunachal Pradesh, which requires a permit: Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, arranged in advance. We handle the paperwork for our guests as part of planning the expedition.

How long is the drive to Tawang?

It is a long, high mountain journey, typically two days from Guwahati or Tezpur, climbing via Bhalukpong and Bomdila and crossing the Sela Pass at around 4,170 metres, usually with a night at Dirang or Bomdila. The new Sela Tunnel has helped, but this remains demanding high-altitude driving.

Is altitude a concern at Tawang?

Yes, the town sits at around 3,000 metres and the Sela Pass is above 4,000 metres, so altitude should be taken seriously. We build acclimatisation and gentle pacing into the itinerary, break the journey en route, and plan realistically for how the height affects most travellers.

When can I visit Tawang?

Roughly March to October, when the roads and the Sela Pass are most reliably open. Winter, November to February, brings heavy snow that can close the passes and make access uncertain, though the snow-covered monastery is spectacular when conditions allow.

Why is Tawang Monastery important?

Founded in the 17th century, it is the largest Buddhist monastery in India and among the largest in the world, a major seat of the Gelugpa school, and closely linked to the 6th Dalai Lama, who was born nearby at Urgelling. It remains a living centre of Monpa Buddhist life.
