Vellore
Moated Fort City and a Temple of Gold
Overview
Vellore is a historic city in northern Tamil Nadu, best known for the 16th-century Vellore Fort, a well-preserved granite fortress ringed by a broad moat and dating from the Vijayanagara period. Within its walls stand the Jalakandeswarar Temple, a church and a mosque, and the fort saw the early sepoy uprising of 1806. Nearby at Thirumalaikodi is the gold-plated Sri Lakshmi Narayani Temple, known as the Golden Temple. Vellore is also a major medical hub. MyTripMyTravel positions Vellore as a fort-and-heritage stop between Chennai and the Tamil Nadu temple towns.
Vellore stands on the Palar river in northern Tamil Nadu, roughly midway between Chennai and the Karnataka border. It is an old garrison and trading town whose centrepiece is the imposing Vellore Fort.
Built in the 16th century during the Vijayanagara era, the fort is one of the best-preserved in South India, with massive granite ramparts and a wide water-filled moat. Inside are the ornate Jalakandeswarar Temple, St John's Church and a mosque, along with museums, and the fort is remembered for the 1806 mutiny of Indian sepoys against the British.
A short drive away at Thirumalaikodi, the Sri Lakshmi Narayani Temple, popularly called the Golden Temple, gleams with extensive gold plating. Vellore is also home to a renowned medical college and hospital, giving the city a steady, cosmopolitan pulse.
