Visakhapatnam

The Jewel of the East Coast

Overview

Visakhapatnam, widely called Vizag, is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh, a port and naval city on the Bay of Bengal where the Eastern Ghats meet the sea. Nicknamed the 'City of Destiny,' it is home to a natural harbour, the Eastern Naval Command, and India's first submarine museum, the INS Kursura. Its seafront runs along Ramakrishna (RK) Beach, overlooked by the Kailasagiri hill park, while the Simhachalam temple crowns a hill inland. It is also the gateway to the Araku Valley. MyTripMyTravel runs Visakhapatnam as a coastal city and Eastern-Ghats gateway leg with chauffeured access.

Visakhapatnam is the eastern coast's most surprising city, an industrial port and naval powerhouse that also happens to have hills tumbling into the Bay of Bengal. Known to everyone as Vizag and nicknamed the 'City of Destiny,' it wraps a deep natural harbour, wears the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command, and yet keeps a long, walkable seafront that softens the whole place at dusk.

The set-pieces are unusual for an Indian city. Ramakrishna Beach unfurls beneath the green hump of Kailasagiri, a hilltop park reached by cable car and crowned with a Shiva-Parvati statue; on the sand sits the INS Kursura, a decommissioned submarine converted into Asia's first submarine museum, alongside a retired naval aircraft. Inland, the Simhachalam temple to Narasimha crowns its own hill, and the rocky Dolphin's Nose headland guards the port entrance.

MyTripMyTravel runs Vizag as a coastal city leg and, more importantly, as the launch pad for the Eastern Ghats. We time the seafront and Kailasagiri to the light, curate the naval-heritage and temple sights, and stage the spectacular train and road journeys up to the Araku Valley, treating the city as the gateway it naturally is.

When to visit

October to March

The cool, dry window from October to March is the most comfortable, pleasant days for the seafront, calm light for Kailasagiri and the beaches, and stable conditions for the Araku Valley run. April to June is hot and humid on the coast. The southwest monsoon (roughly June to September) brings rain and occasional cyclonic weather to the Bay of Bengal, greening the Eastern Ghats but calling for flexible timing.

Visakhapatnam, your questions

What is Visakhapatnam known for?

It is Andhra Pradesh's largest city, a major port and naval base on the Bay of Bengal, known for RK Beach, the Kailasagiri hill park, the INS Kursura submarine museum, the Simhachalam temple, and as the gateway to the Araku Valley in the Eastern Ghats.

How many days do I need in Vizag?

Two nights covers the seafront, Kailasagiri, the naval-heritage sights, and a temple visit. Add a night or two if you are continuing up to the Araku Valley and Borra Caves.

Is Vizag the base for Araku Valley?

Yes. Araku is about 115 km inland in the Eastern Ghats, reached by a scenic railway of many tunnels or by the Ghat road. We stage the journey from Vizag as a day trip or an overnight.

Can I visit the submarine museum?

Yes. The INS Kursura on RK Beach is a decommissioned submarine turned into Asia's first submarine museum, and you can walk through its interior. We include it on the seafront circuit.

When is the best time to visit?

October to March for cool, dry, comfortable coastal weather. The monsoon can bring rain and occasional cyclonic activity to the Bay of Bengal, so we keep those itineraries flexible.

How do I reach Visakhapatnam?

By air into Visakhapatnam International (VTZ), or by rail on the busy east-coast line. We handle airport or station handover and run the fleet locally.
