Best time to travel

October to March for cool desert days and clear nights; the Jaisalmer and Jodhpur legs are best avoided in the fierce April to June heat.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1. Delhi, Arrival & Orientation

Your chauffeur meets you at Delhi (DEL) arrivals and transfers you to your hotel to settle in after the flight.

A gentle first evening introduces you to the capital, a briefing on the route ahead and time to rest before the journey west into Rajasthan begins.

Day 2. Delhi Sightseeing & Overnight Train to Jaisalmer

A full day across Old and New Delhi: the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, then India Gate and Humayun's Tomb.

In the evening you board the overnight train to Jaisalmer, a classic Indian rail journey in a reserved air-conditioned berth that carries you deep into the desert as you sleep.

You arrive in Jaisalmer and explore its living sandstone fort, one of the few forts on earth still fully inhabited, with Jain temples, carved havelis and lanes of everyday life inside the walls.

The afternoon eases off at Gadsisar Lake, a man-made oasis ringed by shrines and ghats, before a first desert sunset.

Frequently asked

What are the overnight and inter-city trains like?

You travel in reserved, air-conditioned carriages, the Delhi to Jaisalmer leg is an overnight train with berths so you sleep as you cross the desert, and the Jaisalmer to Jodhpur run is a shorter daytime journey. Trains are a genuine, comfortable part of Rajasthan travel; if you'd rather drive or fly any leg, we can adjust the plan and price.

Is the desert camp roughing it, or comfortable?

The Sam Dunes camp is a comfortable 'glamping' experience, furnished tents with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms and hot water, plus campfire dinners and folk music. We can upgrade to a premium luxury camp if you'd like more indulgence in the desert.

How much desert heat should I expect?

That depends entirely on season. October to March gives warm, pleasant days and cool nights, ideal for the dunes. April to June is genuinely fierce in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur and best avoided. We plan camel safaris and fort visits for the cooler morning and evening hours year-round.

Does this tour include the full Golden Triangle?

It includes Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Amber Fort and the Pink City, plus the desert cities of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. It skips a dedicated Fatehpur Sikri stop in favour of the Abhaneri stepwell, but that can be added on request.

Is the pace manageable for older travellers?

It's balanced rather than rushed, but there are two train journeys and some long drives between the desert cities. The forts involve walking on uneven historic ground, though jeep ascents and rest stops soften this. We're happy to build in extra nights or lighter days for a gentler pace.

Can we add Udaipur or Pushkar to this route?

Yes, Udaipur's lakes slot in naturally after Jodhpur, and Pushkar's sacred lake and Brahma temple fit between Jodhpur and Jaipur. Both extend the tour by a couple of days each. Send your total available days and we'll design the ideal Rajasthan loop and quote it.
