Meghalaya Monsoon Mist is a private 6-day journey through India's North-East. September to May for waterfalls with clearer skies; the June to August monsoon is spectacular but very wet, and heavy rain can make root-bridge treks slippery.
Day by day itinerary
Day 1. Guwahati → Shillong & Umiam Lake
Your chauffeur meets you at Guwahati airport in Assam and you begin the scenic climb into the Meghalaya hills, a drive of roughly three hours up to Shillong, the 'Scotland of the East'.
En route you stop at Umiam Lake, a vast man-made reservoir ringed by pine-covered hills that is the classic first view of the plateau, before checking in at Shillong for the evening.
Day 2. Cherrapunji, Nohkalikai & Seven Sisters Falls
You drive south to Cherrapunji (Sohra), one of the wettest places on earth, along a ridge road with dramatic gorge views.
The day takes in Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at around 340 metres, and the Seven Sisters (Nohsngithiang) Falls, plus the Mawsmai limestone caves if time allows. The falls run fullest just after the monsoon.
Day 3. Nongriat, Double-Decker Root Bridge Trek
The day's centrepiece is the trek to the double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat, hand-grown over generations by the Khasi people from the roots of rubber fig trees.
It is a demanding hike, around 3,500 stone steps down into the valley and back up, rewarded by the twin-tiered bridge and natural rock pools where you can swim. Sturdy shoes and a reasonable fitness level are essential.
Day 4. Mawlynnong & Dawki, Cleanest Village & Umngot River
You drive to Mawlynnong, famed as Asia's cleanest village, with its living root bridges, bamboo sky-view platform and immaculate flower-lined lanes.
The route continues to Dawki on the Bangladesh border, where the Umngot river runs so clear that boats appear to float on air, a gentle boat ride here is the day's highlight before your overnight nearby.
Day 5. Shillong, Laitlum Canyons
You drive back up towards Shillong, stopping at the breathtaking Laitlum Canyons, a natural amphitheatre of green gorges that opens up dramatically at the ridge's edge.
The rest of the day is at leisure in Shillong, Ward's Lake, the buzzing Police Bazaar, and the city's café and live-music scene are all easy to explore before your final night.
Day 6. Shillong → Guwahati Departure
After breakfast you descend from the hills back to Guwahati, roughly a three-hour drive, for your onward flight.
If time allows before the airport, we can add a quick stop at Guwahati's Kamakhya Temple or the Brahmaputra riverfront to round off the trip.

Frequently asked
How difficult is the double-decker root bridge trek?
It is genuinely strenuous, roughly 3,500 uneven stone steps down to Nongriat and the same climb back, taking most of a day. It suits reasonably fit travellers with sturdy shoes; we can arrange a porter, a shorter single-bridge alternative, or a rest day for those who prefer.
Is Meghalaya worth visiting in the monsoon?
The name says it all, the June to August monsoon makes the waterfalls thunderous and the hills impossibly green, which is why many come. But rain is near-constant, trails get slippery and views cloud over. September to May is the drier, more reliable window while the falls still flow.
Why does the trip start and end in Guwahati, not Shillong?
Shillong's airport has very limited connectivity, so almost all visitors fly into Guwahati in neighbouring Assam and drive up, a scenic three-hour climb into the Meghalaya plateau that is part of the experience.
Is the Dawki river really as clear as the photos?
In the dry season, yes, the Umngot river at Dawki runs so transparent that boats seem to float on air, and it is genuinely one of India's clearest waters. After heavy rain it turns muddy, which is another reason we favour the September to May window.
Are the hotels comfortable in these remote areas?
Shillong offers solid 3 to 4 star and boutique hotels. Cherrapunji and Dawki are more remote, with comfortable but simpler resorts and riverside camps; we pick the best available and set expectations honestly for each stop.
