Mehtab Bagh
The Moonlight Garden Across from the Taj
Overview
Mehtab Bagh, the 'Moonlight Garden', is a Mughal charbagh on the north bank of the Yamuna in Agra, India, laid out directly opposite the Taj Mahal. The last of eleven riverfront gardens attributed to Babur, it was later prized as the perfect vantage point from which to view the Taj, its central pool aligned to reflect the mausoleum. Roughly 300 metres square, it has been restored by the Archaeological Survey of India. It offers the finest sunset view of the Taj's rear elevation, away from the crowds. MyTripMyTravel pairs it with a Taj sunrise for both faces in a single day.
Mehtab Bagh is the other half of the Taj Mahal, the garden built to look at it. Set on the far bank of the Yamuna, perfectly aligned with the mausoleum, it is where the Mughals came to see their own masterpiece across the water.
It began as the last of eleven riverfront gardens attributed to Babur and was later valued as the ideal Taj-viewing spot; a large octagonal pool at its edge was set to mirror the monument. Long silted over, it has been restored by the Archaeological Survey of India with period-appropriate Mughal planting, and now doubles as a birding ground.
This is also the home of the 'Black Taj' legend, the story that Shah Jahan meant to build a mirror mausoleum in black marble here. It is folklore: excavation has found only a garden and its tank, no black tomb. What Mehtab Bagh genuinely offers is the best sunset view of the Taj's rear face, and MyTripMyTravel pairs it with a sunrise at the main monument for both elevations in one day.
