Alibaug

Konkan Coast Beach Retreat

Overview

Alibaug is a coastal town on the Konkan shore of Maharashtra's Raigad district, directly across the harbour from Mumbai and long a favoured weekend and second-home retreat for the city. Its calm beaches, Alibaug, Nagaon, Kihim, and Varsoli, line a palm-fringed coast, while the sea-fort of Kolaba, built under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and reachable on foot at low tide, guards the shore. The town was founded by the Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre and hosts a historic magnetic observatory. MyTripMyTravel runs Alibaug as a relaxed coastal leg, a fast catamaran crossing from Mumbai, beachfront villas, and Konkan seafood by the sea.

Alibaug is Mumbai's favourite coastal escape, close enough to reach by a quick ferry across the harbour, far enough in mood to feel like the Konkan proper. Its unhurried beaches, coconut groves, and old sea-forts have made it the weekend and second-home retreat of choice for the city, and a fast catamaran crossing has only drawn the two closer.

The town has real Maratha history beneath the leisure. It was founded and developed by Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, the formidable admiral of the Maratha navy, and the sea-fort of Kolaba, built under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and standing just offshore, can be walked out to across the sand at low tide. Alibaug is also home to a historic magnetic observatory, part of a scientific record kept on this coast for over a century. Down the shore lie the beaches of Nagaon, Kihim, Akshi, and Varsoli, and further south the undefeated island fortress of Murud-Janjira.

MyTripMyTravel runs Alibaug as a relaxed, well-arranged coastal leg. We book the fast ferry crossing from Mumbai to Mandwa, base guests in the best beachfront villas and boutique resorts, time the Kolaba Fort walk to the tide, and route the food through genuine Konkan and Malvani seafood, an easy, restorative counterpoint to a city itinerary.

When to visit

November to February

The cool, dry coastal winter from November to February is the most pleasant time for the beaches and the sea-fort, with mild days and calm seas. March to May is hot and humid on this exposed shore. The southwest monsoon (June to September) is heavy and dramatic, greening the Konkan and rough on the water, ferry crossings can be affected and beach conditions turn unsafe for swimming, so we plan around the weather and sea state. Winter weekends are busy with Mumbai visitors.

Good to know

Alibaug, your questions

Should I reach Alibaug by ferry or road?

For guests coming from Mumbai, the fast catamaran ferry to Mandwa, about an hour, is usually the quickest and most pleasant route, with the fleet meeting the jetty. Road via the Atal Setu sea-link is the reliable all-weather alternative.

How many nights should I spend?

One to two nights is ideal for a relaxed coastal break, the beaches, Kolaba Fort, and Konkan seafood, at the unhurried pace the town is made for.

Can I walk to Kolaba Fort?

Yes, at low tide you can walk out across the sand to the offshore fort; at high tide it is cut off. We time the visit to the tide chart so the walk is easy and safe.

Which beach is the best?

Alibaug and Nagaon are the main, lively strands; Kihim and Akshi are quieter and greener; and Kashid, further south, has the whitest sand. We match the beach to whether you want activity or seclusion.

Is alcohol available and is it a good relaxed break?

Yes, Maharashtra is not a dry state, and Alibaug's villas, resorts, and shacks are geared to a leisurely coastal stay, making it an easy unwind after a Mumbai city leg.

When is the best time to visit?

November to February for cool, dry weather and calm seas. The monsoon is heavy and can affect ferries and swimming, so we plan around the sea state.
