Bhojeshwar Temple
The Unfinished Somnath of the East
Overview
The Bhojeshwar Temple is an 11th-century Shiva temple at Bhojpur, about 28 km from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, attributed to the Paramara king Bhoja (r. c. 1010 to 1055). It is famous for one of the largest monolithic Shiva lingams in India, carved from a single stone and rising about 2.3 m, and for being unfinished: its shikhara was never completed and the original earthen construction ramp still stands beside it. Masons' architectural plans are engraved on the surrounding rocks. Often called the 'Somnath of the East', it is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. MyTripMyTravel pairs it with Bhimbetka on an escorted day from Bhopal.
The Bhojeshwar Temple is one of India's most instructive buildings precisely because it was never finished. Raja Bhoja's masons raised the sanctum and set the colossal lingam, then stopped, leaving the great flat roof incomplete and the shikhara unbuilt, so the visitor sees a medieval temple caught mid-construction.
Inside sits one of the largest monolithic Shiva lingams in the country, carved from a single stone on a vast three-part platform. Beside the temple the original earthen ramp used to haul stone to the roof still survives, and the surrounding rocks carry engraved architectural drawings, a rare, legible record of how such a temple was designed and built.
MyTripMyTravel visits Bhojpur with a guide who reads the ramp, the engraved plans, and the unfinished roof as a single lesson in medieval engineering, then pairs it with the Bhimbetka rock shelters on one escorted day from Bhopal.

Bhojeshwar Temple, your questions
Why is the Bhojeshwar Temple unfinished?
Construction halted in the 11th century for reasons still debated; the incomplete roof and missing shikhara are exactly why it is so valuable, it preserves the medieval building process.
How large is the Shiva lingam?
It is monolithic, carved from a single stone and rising about 2.3 m, making it one of the largest in India, set on a broad three-part platform.
Why is it called the 'Somnath of the East'?
For its scale and ambition as a great Shiva temple; the name reflects its intended grandeur under Raja Bhoja.
How long do I need there?
About 45 to 60 minutes with a guide for the lingam, the ramp, and the engraved plans.
