Bhopal
The City of Lakes and Begums
Overview
Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh in central India, known as the 'City of Lakes' for the Upper Lake and Lower Lake at its heart. For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries it was governed by a remarkable succession of female rulers, the Begums of Bhopal, whose legacy includes the vast Taj-ul-Masajid, among the largest mosques in India. The city is also the gateway to two World Heritage Sites, the Sanchi stupas and the Bhimbetka rock shelters, and to fine museums of tribal and prehistoric art. Bhopal has its own airport (BHO). MyTripMyTravel uses it as a cultured base for exploring central India's ancient heritage.
Bhopal is central India's most liveable capital and one of its least-understood cities. Two lakes define it, the older, larger Upper Lake said to date to the 11th-century reign of Raja Bhoj, and the Lower Lake beside it, giving the city an unusual calm and a waterfront rhythm rare in the region.
Its distinctive history is the rule of the Begums: four generations of women who governed Bhopal for over a century, building mosques, palaces, and institutions. Their greatest monument is the Taj-ul-Masajid, a huge pink-and-white congregational mosque that ranks among India's largest. The old city around the Chowk keeps its Moti Masjid, Gohar Mahal, and lively bazaars, while the newer city holds some of India's best museums, the tribal-art collections of the Museum of Man and the state museum among them.
For travellers, Bhopal's real strength is position. Within an easy drive lie two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi and the prehistoric rock paintings of Bhimbetka, making the city the natural, comfortable base from which to reach the deep past of central India. MyTripMyTravel runs it exactly that way: lake-facing stays, guided museums and old city, and chauffeured day missions to the ancient sites.

Bhopal in brief
When to visit
October to March
October to March is the pleasant season in Bhopal, with mild days ideal for the lakes, the old city, and day trips to Sanchi and Bhimbetka. The post-monsoon months are especially green, with full lakes and clear light. April to June is hot; July to September brings the monsoon, which lifts the lakes and landscape but can make outdoor sightseeing intermittent. The winter window is best for a comfortable central-India base.
