Champaner
The UNESCO Pre-Mughal City
Overview
Champaner is a historic town in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat, at the foot of the hill of Pavagadh, and together they form the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2004 as a rare, largely unchanged pre-Mughal Islamic city. Sultan Mahmud Begada made it his capital in the late fifteenth century and built extensively, including the superb Jami Masjid, which blends Islamic form with Hindu and Jain craft. Crowning Pavagadh hill is the Kalika Mata temple, an important Shakti Peeth reached by a ropeway. MyTripMyTravel runs Champaner as a day of layered heritage from nearby Vadodara.
Champaner is one of India's most evocative lost capitals. Founded in the eighth century by the Chavda ruler Vanraj, it was captured in 1484 by Mahmud Begada, the great Sultan of Gujarat, who made it his capital, renaming it Muhammadabad, and adorned it with mosques, palaces, gateways, wells, and gardens over the following decades. When the Mughals took Gujarat the capital shifted away, and Champaner was largely abandoned, which is precisely why it survives so intact.
In 2004 the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described as the only complete and unchanged Islamic pre-Mughal city in India. Its masterpiece is the Jami Masjid, a large congregational mosque of the late fifteenth century whose carving marries Islamic geometry with the ornament of Hindu and Jain craftsmen, its two tall minarets rising over a forest of columns. Around it lie other mosques, stepwells, and fortifications scattered through the countryside.
Above the ruins rises Pavagadh, a volcanic hill crowned by the Kalika Mata temple, one of the important Shakti Peeths and a major site of Hindu pilgrimage, now reached by a ropeway that spares the long climb. The hill layers Hindu, Jain, and Islamic heritage in a single ascent. MyTripMyTravel runs Champaner as a day of remarkable, interwoven history from nearby Vadodara, briefing guests on the temple's photography rules and pilgrimage crowds.

When to visit
October to February
October to February is the comfortable season for wandering the dispersed ruins and climbing or riding up to the Pavagadh temple. Chaitra Navratri, usually in March or April, brings very large pilgrim crowds to the Kalika Mata shrine, which we plan around. March to June is hot, best handled in the early morning, while the monsoon (July to September) greens the hills beautifully but can bring rain that affects the climb and views. The park pairs easily with Vadodara as a cool-season day.
