Vadodara
The Cultural Capital of Gujarat
Overview
Vadodara, historically Baroda, is a city on the Vishwamitri river in eastern Gujarat, long regarded as the state's cultural capital. It was the seat of the Gaekwad Maratha dynasty, and its greatest ruler, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, turned it into a centre of art, education, and reform. The city's landmark is the vast Laxmi Vilas Palace, an Indo-Saracenic residence completed in 1890 and still home to the royal family. Add the Sayaji Baug gardens, fine museums, and the Fine Arts faculty of MSU, and Vadodara is Gujarat's most refined stop. MyTripMyTravel runs it as a heritage-and-arts base, and the natural gateway to Champaner and the Statue of Unity.
Vadodara, known for generations as Baroda, is the most cultured city in Gujarat, a legacy of the Gaekwads, the Maratha dynasty that ruled here, and above all of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, whose long reign at the turn of the twentieth century made the city a byword for progressive education, industry, and the arts. He founded the university that still anchors the city and drew scholars, artists, and reformers into its orbit.
The emblem of that era is the Laxmi Vilas Palace, an Indo-Saracenic pile completed in 1890 to the designs of Major Charles Mant, often described as several times the size of Buckingham Palace, and still the residence of the Gaekwad family. Around it the city arranges its pleasures: the sprawling Sayaji Baug gardens with their museum and zoo, the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum with its Raja Ravi Varma paintings, the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, and the renowned Fine Arts faculty of Maharaja Sayajirao University. During Navratri, Vadodara becomes one of India's great garba cities.
MyTripMyTravel uses Vadodara as a relaxed, art-rich base in eastern Gujarat. We arrange palace and museum visits, time a stop for the city's celebrated garba season where dates allow, and run the short excursions to the UNESCO ruins of Champaner-Pavagadh and onward to the Statue of Unity at Kevadia.

Vadodara in brief
When to visit
October to February
October to February is the comfortable season, with mild days for palace and garden visits. Navratri, usually in late September or October, is Vadodara's cultural high point, when the city dances garba through the night, thrilling but heavily booked, so we plan well ahead. March to June brings severe heat, often above 40°C, best handled with an air-conditioned fleet, while the monsoon (July to September) is humid but greens the surrounding Panchmahal hills toward Champaner.
