Gulmarg
Meadow of Flowers and India's Ski Capital
Overview
Gulmarg, the 'Meadow of Flowers', is a high-altitude resort town at about 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal range of Jammu & Kashmir, roughly 50 km from Srinagar. It is India's premier ski destination and home to the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world's highest cable cars, which climbs in two stages to Kongdoori and the shoulder of Apharwat Peak near 3,980 metres. Its summer meadows hold one of the world's highest golf courses and the colonial St. Mary's Church. MyTripMyTravel runs Gulmarg as a chauffeured alpine mission, the gondola, the meadows or the ski slopes by season, and a warm valley base.
Gulmarg is a broad alpine bowl in the Pir Panjal, ringed by fir forest and snow peaks and named for the wildflowers that carpet it in summer, the 'Meadow of Flowers'. Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak is said to have renamed the earlier Gaurimarg for its blooms, and the British later turned the meadow into a hill retreat, leaving behind the small stone St. Mary's Church and one of the world's highest golf courses.
Today Gulmarg is best known for the Gulmarg Gondola, a two-stage cable car that lifts visitors first to Kongdoori and then to the flank of Apharwat Peak near 3,980 metres, in winter, the launch point for some of Asia's finest lift-served and off-piste skiing. In summer the same slopes soften into meadow walks, pony trails to Khilanmarg, and the frozen-then-thawing Alpather Lake beneath Apharwat.
MyTripMyTravel runs Gulmarg by season. In winter we stage the ski days with certified guides and attention to avalanche conditions; in the greener months we build meadow drives, gentle treks, and gondola rides for the high views. The high altitude and mountain weather are respected throughout, the gondola can close on short notice, and our planners keep the day flexible.

Gulmarg in brief
When to visit
December to February (ski) · April to October (meadows)
Gulmarg has two distinct seasons. December to February brings reliable snow and the ski season, with the gondola serving Apharwat's slopes, spectacular, but cold, and subject to avalanche closures that we plan around with guides. April to October is the green season of meadows, wildflowers, golf, and high walks, with clear mountain views. The gondola can pause in high wind or poor visibility in any season, so our planners keep timing flexible and buffer the day.

Getting there
How to reach Gulmarg
The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International (SXR) at Srinagar, about 56 km away; we manage the fleet handover and the mountain drive up.
Gulmarg is reached by a scenic ≈ 50 km chauffeured drive from Srinagar via Tangmarg; the final climb can be affected by snow in deep winter, which our planners buffer.
The Kashmir Valley rail line serves the Srinagar area; from there the onward leg to Gulmarg is by road, which we handle end to end.
Our GPS-tracked, orthopedic-grade vehicles handle the Srinagar to Gulmarg transfer and local runs to Tangmarg and the gondola base.
Where to stay
Full-service mountain resorts and hotels near the gondola with heated rooms, spa facilities, and meadow or peak views.
Comfortable lodges and boutique stays geared to the winter season, close to the slopes and gear rental.
For guests who prefer a lower altitude at night, a Srinagar lake stay with day excursions up to Gulmarg.
Where to eat
Rogan josh, gushtaba, and slow-cooked mountain fare served at altitude in the resort dining rooms.
Saffron-and-almond kahwa tea and Kashmiri breads, the local antidote to the cold after a day on the slopes.
Hearty soups, grills, and vegetarian Kashmiri dishes such as dum aloo and haak in hotel restaurants.

Gulmarg, your questions
Is Gulmarg good for skiing?
Yes, Gulmarg is widely regarded as India's finest ski destination, with lift-served and off-piste terrain served by the gondola off Apharwat Peak. We arrange certified guides, gear, and lessons, and always plan around avalanche and weather conditions.
How high does the Gulmarg Gondola go?
The gondola runs in two stages: the first to Kongdoori, and the second to the shoulder of Apharwat Peak near 3,980 metres. It can close at short notice in high wind or poor visibility, so we keep the day flexible.
Can you visit Gulmarg in summer?
Absolutely. From spring to autumn the snow gives way to wildflower meadows, golf on one of the world's highest courses, pony treks to Khilanmarg, and the Alpather Lake walk, a completely different, gentle side of Gulmarg.
How many days should I spend in Gulmarg?
One to two nights suits most travellers, a full day for the gondola and the meadows or slopes, with a second day for a trek or unhurried skiing. Many pair it with Srinagar and Pahalgam on a Kashmir circuit.
