Sonamarg
Meadow of Gold and Gateway to Ladakh
Overview
Sonamarg, the 'Meadow of Gold', lies at about 2,800 metres in Ganderbal district, Jammu & Kashmir, on the Sindh (Nallah Sindh) river roughly 80 km from Srinagar. It is the last major valley town before the Zoji La pass into Ladakh and the trailhead for the Thajiwas glacier and the celebrated Kashmir Great Lakes trek. Alpine meadows, glacier-fed streams, and trout fishing define it. Because Zoji La and the town close under heavy winter snow, Sonamarg is essentially a summer destination. MyTripMyTravel runs it as a chauffeured day or overnight alpine mission from Srinagar, or as the first stage of a Leh crossing.
Sonamarg, the 'Meadow of Gold', named for the light on its spring flowers, is the highest of the Kashmir Valley's resort meadows, set where the Sindh river runs green and fast between fir-clad slopes and snow peaks. It is the last real town before the road climbs to the Zoji La pass and drops into Ladakh, which gives it the feel of a threshold: half alpine resort, half mountain staging post.
The signature short excursion is the Thajiwas glacier, reached by a pony ride or walk up a side valley, where snow lingers into summer. Sonamarg is also a great trekking gateway, most famously for the multi-day Kashmir Great Lakes trek that strings together high alpine tarns such as Vishansar, Krishansar, and Gangbal. The Sindh's cold water holds trout, and the meadows make for easy riverside afternoons.
MyTripMyTravel runs Sonamarg as a chauffeured day trip or overnight from Srinagar, and as the launch point for the overland crossing to Leh. The town is seasonal: heavy winter snow closes both Zoji La and much of Sonamarg itself, so it is enjoyed roughly May to September. Road delays from weather and landslides are real, and our planners buffer the schedule.

Sonamarg in brief
When to visit
May to September
Sonamarg is a summer destination. Roughly May to September the meadows are green, the Sindh runs full, and the Thajiwas glacier and high treks are accessible; this is also when the Zoji La pass to Ladakh is open. From late autumn the town and pass close under heavy snow, beautiful but largely inaccessible, with Zoji La typically shut from around November to April. Even in season, weather and landslides can delay the mountain road, which our planners buffer.

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International (SXR) at Srinagar, about 80 km away; we manage the fleet handover and the mountain drive.
Sonamarg is a ≈ 80 km chauffeured drive from Srinagar along the Sindh valley on the Srinagar to Leh highway; weather and landslides can delay the leg.
The Kashmir Valley rail line serves the Srinagar area; the onward leg to Sonamarg is by road, which we handle end to end.
Our GPS-tracked, orthopedic-grade vehicles handle the day trip or overnight from Srinagar and, in season, the onward crossing toward Leh.
Where to stay
Seasonal full-service resorts and hotels on the meadow with river or peak views, open through the summer months.
Comfortable tented camps and lodges for trekkers and those wanting a night close to the glacier trailheads.

Good to know
Sonamarg, your questions
What is there to do in Sonamarg?
The classic outing is the Thajiwas glacier by pony or on foot, alongside riverside walks on the Sindh, trout fishing, and, for the fit, the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. It is also the gateway to Ladakh over the Zoji La pass.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
Not really. Heavy snow closes much of the town and the Zoji La pass, typically from around November to April, so Sonamarg is essentially a summer destination enjoyed from roughly May to September.
Can I travel from Sonamarg to Leh?
Yes, in the open season. Sonamarg is the last valley town before Zoji La on the Srinagar to Leh highway, making it a natural first stage of the overland crossing to Ladakh, which we plan with acclimatisation and road-condition buffers.
How long does it take to reach Sonamarg from Srinagar?
About 80 km, or roughly two to three hours by road along the Sindh valley, depending on traffic and weather. It works well as a full-day excursion or a summer overnight, which our fleet handles.
