Albert Hall Museum
The Indo-Saracenic Jewel of Ram Niwas Garden
Overview
The Albert Hall Museum is the oldest museum in Rajasthan, set in the Ram Niwas Garden in Jaipur, India. Designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob in the Indo-Saracenic style, its foundation stone was laid in 1876 by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, after whom it is named, and it opened as a museum in 1887. Its galleries hold miniature paintings, carpets, metalware, ivory, arms, sculptures, and a rare Egyptian mummy. Floodlit at dusk, the building is itself the headline exhibit. MyTripMyTravel includes it on the wider Jaipur cultural circuit and times a photo stop for its illuminated evening façade.
The Albert Hall Museum is where Jaipur's craft heritage and its colonial-era architecture meet. The building itself, domes, arcades, and courtyards in the Indo-Saracenic style designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, is as much the attraction as anything inside it, and at night, floodlit against Ram Niwas Garden, it becomes one of the city's set-piece images.
Opened in 1887 as Rajasthan's first museum, its galleries range across miniature paintings, carpets, metal and ivory work, arms, sculpture, and pottery, alongside a rare Egyptian mummy that surprises most visitors. It was conceived partly to document and revive the region's decorative crafts, and that emphasis on making still shapes the collection.
MyTripMyTravel folds it into the wider Jaipur cultural circuit and, for those short on time, times a photo stop for the illuminated evening façade when the crowds thin.
