Jaswant Thada
The Marble Cenotaph of Marwar
Overview
Jaswant Thada is a white-marble royal cenotaph in Jodhpur, India, commissioned in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and completed in 1906. Built as the cremation memorial of the Rathore rulers of Marwar, it stands beside a small lake just below Mehrangarh Fort. Its intricately carved sheets of Makrana marble are so thin they glow warm when sunlight passes through them, earning it the nickname the 'Taj Mahal of Marwar'. Inside hang portraits of the Jodhpur maharajas. MyTripMyTravel pairs it with Mehrangarh on one escorted Blue City morning.
Jaswant Thada is the graceful counterpoint to Mehrangarh's mass, a small, luminous marble cenotaph set beside a lake just beneath the great fort, and the most serene stop in Jodhpur.
Maharaja Sardar Singh commissioned it in 1899 in memory of his father, Jaswant Singh II, and it became the royal cremation memorial of the Rathore rulers of Marwar. Its marble is worked into sheets so thin that sunlight passes through them, giving the whole structure a warm inner glow, the reason it is sometimes called the 'Taj Mahal of Marwar'.
Inside hang portraits of the Jodhpur maharajas; outside, tiered gardens, carved chhatris and additional royal cenotaphs frame views back up to Mehrangarh. MyTripMyTravel sequences the two together, descending from the fort to the cenotaph on a single escorted Blue City morning.
