The Blue City Beneath Mehrangarh

The Brief

Jodhpur is the second-largest city in Rajasthan, India, founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha as the capital of the Marwar kingdom. It is called the 'Blue City' for the indigo-washed houses of its old quarter, which cluster beneath Mehrangarh — one of the largest and best-preserved forts in India, rising 120 metres on a sheer rock escarpment. Other landmarks include the marble Jaswant Thada cenotaph and the Umaid Bhawan Palace. Jodhpur is the gateway to the Thar Desert and a core stop on the Rajasthan circuit. MyTripMyTravel runs Jodhpur as a fort-and-desert mission with escorted access and heritage-palace stays.

Jodhpur is dominated by a single, overwhelming object: Mehrangarh. Few forts in the world sit on their city the way this one does — 120 metres of vertical sandstone with the blue old town spilling down from its base. It is the reason to come and the experience that organises everything else.

Inside, Mehrangarh is one of India's best-curated fort museums: palaces, courtyards, palanquins, and ramparts with cannon still in place and a drop that explains why the city below stayed safe for five centuries. Below it, the indigo lanes — originally Brahmin houses, the colour now citywide — make Jodhpur the most photogenic walking city in Rajasthan. The marble Jaswant Thada and the Art-Deco grandeur of Umaid Bhawan complete the set.

MyTripMyTravel runs Jodhpur as a controlled fort-and-desert leg: escorted early entry to Mehrangarh before the light hardens, a curated blue-city walk, and the option to push west into the Thar for a desert-camp or Bishnoi-village extension before continuing to Jaisalmer or Udaipur.

When to Deploy

October – March

Jodhpur is best from October to March, when desert days are warm but the fort climb and blue-city walk are comfortable and the evenings are cool. The Marwar and Rajasthan International Folk Festivals (October) at Mehrangarh are a cultural highlight. April to June brings severe Thar heat above 42°C, advisable only with an air-conditioned fleet and dawn sightseeing.
