Kodaikanal

The Princess of Hill Stations

Overview

Kodaikanal is a hill station in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu's Dindigul district, set at about 2,130 metres and known as the 'Princess of Hill Stations.' Established in 1845 by American missionaries as an escape from the plains' heat, it is built around a star-shaped artificial lake and framed by shola forests, granite cliffs, and cascades. It is one of the few places to witness the Neelakurinji, the blue flower that carpets the slopes once every twelve years. The nearest airport is Madurai. MyTripMyTravel runs Kodaikanal as a quiet, misty-highland retreat, heritage stays, guided cliff walks, and the cool-climate produce of the hills.

Kodaikanal is the gentler, greener counterpoint to Ooty. Founded by American missionaries in 1845 in the Palani Hills, it never fully industrialised into a resort town, and it keeps a wooded, contemplative quiet, shola forests, pine slopes, and a cool, often-misty highland air at 2,130 metres.

Its centre is the star-shaped lake, engineered in 1863, ringed by walking and cycling paths. From Coaker's Walk the town falls away to the plains; the Pillar Rocks stand as three sheer granite columns; and the slopes hold the Neelakurinji, the kurinji flower that blooms en masse only once every twelve years, last in 2018.

MyTripMyTravel runs Kodaikanal as a slow, restorative highland leg: heritage stays with valley views, guided walks along the cliffs and through the shola, and the simple pleasures of the hills, homemade chocolate, fresh cheese, and orchard fruit.

When to visit

October to June

Like Ooty, Kodaikanal is a heat refuge, busiest and warmest-comfortable from April to June when the plains are scorching. October to March is cool to cold, misty, and quieter, with crisp days ideal for cliff walks, December and January can be genuinely cold. The monsoons bring heavy mist and rain that obscure the valley views, so clear-day flexibility matters; we plan the walks around the weather.
