Ooty

The Queen of Hill Stations

Overview

Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is the 'Queen of Hill Stations,' capital of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, set at about 2,240 metres in the Western Ghats. Developed by the British in the 1820s as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency, it is defined by tea estates, colonial churches, and the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway that climbs from the plains by rack-and-pinion steam. Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris, rises just outside town. The nearest airport is Coimbatore. MyTripMyTravel runs Ooty as a colonial-hill retreat, heritage stays, a reserved toy-train leg, and private Nilgiri tea-estate access.

Ooty is the original Indian hill station, the place the British Madras Presidency fled to each summer, and the template every other South Indian hill town would copy. At 2,240 metres it trades the heat of the plains for eucalyptus air, tea slopes, and a lingering colonial architecture of churches, clubs, and stone bungalows.

Its signature is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line whose steam locomotives push their carriages up gradients too steep for ordinary track using a central rack rail, a slow, spectacular climb from Mettupalayam through tunnels and tea. Above the town, Doddabetta at 2,637 metres is the highest point in the Nilgiris, and the Government Botanical Garden has been cultivated since 1848.

MyTripMyTravel runs Ooty as an unhurried heritage leg: a reserved seat on the toy train, timed against the light; private access to a working tea estate and factory; and stays in the colonial-era properties that still hold the hill station's character.

When to visit

October to June

Ooty is a summer refuge, so April to June, when the plains bake, is its busiest and warmest-comfortable season, with the flower shows in full colour. October to March is cool to cold, crisp, and quieter, with misty mornings and occasional frost in December and January. The southwest and northeast monsoons bring heavy spells that can disrupt the mountain railway; we build buffer around the toy-train leg accordingly.
