Lansdowne

A Quiet Garhwali Cantonment in the Pine

Overview

Lansdowne is a small, tranquil cantonment hill town in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, set at about 1,700 m amid oak and pine forest. Founded in 1887 and named after the then Viceroy Lord Lansdowne, it has been the regimental centre of the Garhwal Rifles ever since, and the army's stewardship keeps it clean, green, and refreshingly uncommercialised. Attractions are gentle, the Bhulla Tal lake, the Tip-in-Top viewpoint, the war-memorial museum, and colonial-era churches. Being cantonment-managed, parts fall under army regulation. MyTripMyTravel operates it as a quiet chauffeured hill retreat close to the plains.

Lansdowne is the antidote to the busier Garhwal hill stations. Perched at about 1,700 m among dense oak, pine, and deodar in Pauri Garhwal, it was established as a British cantonment in 1887 and named after Lord Lansdowne, then Viceroy of India. From the beginning it was, and remains, the regimental home of the Garhwal Rifles, and that military stewardship has spared it the ropeways, traffic, and concrete sprawl that overtook places like Mussoorie.

The result is a town of quiet, tree-lined roads, colonial bungalows, and a slow rhythm. The sights are modest and easily walked: the small Bhulla Tal lake with its pedal boats, the Tip-in-Top (Tiffin Top) ridge viewpoint looking out to the snow line on clear days, the Darwan Singh war-memorial museum recording the regiment's history, and heritage churches like St. Mary's and St. John's. The Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple sits in deep cedar forest a short drive away.

MyTripMyTravel runs Lansdowne as a restful, low-altitude hill retreat, ideal for guests who want mountain air and forest walks without the crowds or the demanding drives of the interior. Being an active cantonment, parts of the town are army-administered, with some areas restricted and identity checks at points, we handle the formalities and time the visit for clear weather. Its proximity to the plains, via the Kotdwar railhead, also makes it an easy, gentle add-on to a Garhwal or Corbett itinerary.

When to visit

October to April (with clear-view winter)

Lansdowne is a year-round retreat thanks to its moderate altitude, but the finest months run from October to April. Post-monsoon autumn brings washed-clean air and the best chance of distant Himalayan snow views from Tip-in-Top; winter is cold and crisp with occasional light snow, atmospheric among the pines. Spring is mild and green. April to June is a pleasant warm-weather escape from the plains, cooler than Delhi though busier on weekends. The monsoon from July to September is lush and quiet but wet, with mist that hides the views and the odd landslide on the approach roads, so we plan around the rain for clear-weather visits.

Good to know

Lansdowne, your questions

Why is Lansdowne so quiet compared with other hill stations?

Because it is an active cantonment, home to the Garhwal Rifles regimental centre since 1887. Army stewardship has kept it clean, green, and free of the ropeways, traffic, and construction that overtook towns like Mussoorie, making it a deliberately peaceful retreat.

Are there restrictions because it is an army town?

Yes, some areas are army-administered with restricted access and occasional identity checks, and photography is limited in places. It does not hinder a normal visit, we handle the formalities and guide you to the open, visitor-friendly parts.

How do I get to Lansdowne?

The nearest railhead is Kotdwar, about 40 km below, and it is roughly a 250 km chauffeured drive from Delhi or 150 km from Dehradun's airport. Its accessibility from the plains is a big part of its appeal as a short escape.

Is Lansdowne good for families or older travellers?

Very much so. Its moderate altitude, gentle walks, calm atmosphere, and short easy sights make it well suited to families and older guests who want mountain air without demanding treks or high-altitude drives.
