Pench

The Jungle Book Teak Forests

Overview

Pench is a tiger reserve straddling the Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra border in central India, named after the Pench river that runs through it. Its teak-and-bamboo forests and the surrounding Seoni country are widely regarded as the setting that inspired Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'. A Project Tiger reserve, Pench holds tigers, leopard, dhole, large herds of gaur and deer, and abundant birdlife, with strong sightings of prey and predators, though tigers are never guaranteed. Its core zones close during the monsoon. The nearest airport is Nagpur, about 90 km away. MyTripMyTravel runs Pench with premium lodges and expert-guided safaris.

Pench is the 'Jungle Book' forest, the teak woodland of the old Seoni district that Kipling, who never visited India as an adult, drew on for the world of Mowgli, Baloo, and Bagheera. It is a quieter, less-trafficked reserve than some of its neighbours, which is much of its appeal: open teak forest, rolling hills, and the Pench river threading through the middle.

The reserve spans two states, the larger, more-visited portion in Madhya Pradesh and a contiguous section in Maharashtra, and is a Project Tiger reserve with a healthy predator population. Game drives from the MP-side gates of Turia, Karmajhiri, and Jamtara move through dry teak forest that opens up beautifully in the cooler months, with large herds of gaur, chital, and sambar, packs of dhole, leopard, and tiger. Pench is also outstanding for birds, especially in winter when migrants gather around its water bodies. As with any wild forest, tigers are seen by luck and patience, never on demand.

MyTripMyTravel runs Pench as a relaxed, high-quality wilderness leg, often paired with Kanha. We use premium lodges near the Turia gate, resident naturalists, and pre-secured permits, and we like Pench for guests who want serious wildlife without the density of visitors, and for its easy access from Nagpur.

When to visit

October to June (park open)

Pench's core zones are open from around October to the end of June and closed for the monsoon. The cool, clear October to March months are the most comfortable and superb for birding, when winter migrants throng the water bodies. April to June is hot but often best for mammal sightings as animals gather at shrinking waterholes in the open teak forest. The core reserve closes roughly from July to the end of September; only limited buffer routes may run. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed in any month.

Good to know

Pench, your questions

Is Pench really the Jungle Book forest?

The Seoni teak forests that make up Pench are widely accepted as the inspiration for Kipling's 'The Jungle Book', even though he wrote from afar. The landscape genuinely evokes Mowgli's world, and naturalists enjoy telling the connection.

Will I see a tiger?

Possibly, not certainly. Pench has a healthy tiger population but this is wild, free-ranging forest, so sightings depend on luck and patience. We improve your odds with multiple drives and strong naturalists, but make no guarantees.

When is Pench open?

The core zones run roughly October to the end of June and close for the monsoon, approximately July to the end of September, when only limited buffer routes may operate. We plan trips within the open season.

Why fly into Nagpur rather than a Madhya Pradesh airport?

Nagpur, in neighbouring Maharashtra, is only about 90 km from the main Turia gate, the closest and best-connected airport to Pench. It makes the transfer short and easy, and we handle it end to end.

Can I combine Pench with Kanha?

Yes, and it is a natural pairing. The two reserves link by road, letting us build a twin-park central-India safari, Pench's open teak forest and Kanha's sal woodland and meadows in one circuit.
