Rameshwaram
The Sacred Island of the Ramayana
Overview
Rameshwaram is a sacred island town in the Gulf of Mannar, near the eastern tip of Tamil Nadu, linked to the mainland by the Pamban rail bridge. It is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and, in the Ramayana, the point from which Rama is said to have built a bridge to Lanka. Its Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, has the longest pillared corridor of any Indian temple. Beyond it lie the ghost town of Dhanushkodi and views toward Adam's Bridge. This is a major, busy pilgrim site, MyTripMyTravel arranges escorted, well-timed visits.
Rameshwaram sits on Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar, a low, sun-bleached spit of land that reaches toward Sri Lanka and carries some of the deepest sanctity in Hindu tradition. It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage points, and in the Ramayana it is the shore from which Rama is said to have raised a causeway to rescue Sita, a story woven into every temple and beach here.
The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the centrepiece: one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, famous for the longest pillared temple corridor in India, its sculpted galleries running for hundreds of metres. Pilgrims bathe at Agni Theertham on the sea and at the temple's sacred wells before darshan. Beyond the town, the road runs out to Dhanushkodi, a settlement destroyed by a cyclone in 1964 and left as an atmospheric ruin between two seas, with the shoals of Adam's Bridge stretching toward the horizon. The town is also the birthplace and resting place of former president A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
MyTripMyTravel treats Rameshwaram with honesty about its scale. This is a living, heavily visited pilgrimage centre where queues and darshan timings matter, so we plan visits carefully, provide an informed escort through the temple corridors and rituals, and pair the sacred sites with the quieter beauty of Dhanushkodi and the island's coast.

Rameshwaram in brief
When to visit
October to March
The cooler, drier months from October to March are the most comfortable for the island, when the coastal heat eases. The region catches the northeast monsoon around October and November, which can bring showers and occasional rough seas. Major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri draw very large crowds to the temple. April to June is hot and humid, so temple visits and the Dhanushkodi drive are best kept to early mornings and evenings with an air-conditioned fleet.

One overnight is ideal. It lets you visit the Ramanathaswamy Temple without rushing, drive out to Dhanushkodi, and see the Pamban crossing, all timed around darshan and the coastal light.
Is Rameshwaram very crowded?
It is one of India's major pilgrimage centres and can be busy, with real queues at the temple, especially on festival days. We plan timings carefully and provide an escort to make the visit calm and informed.

Visitors of all faiths may enter the main temple and its famous corridors, though ritual bathing and some inner areas are for pilgrims, and a dress code applies. Our escort guides you respectfully.
