Day 1. Chennai, Arrival & Kapaleeshwarar Temple

Your chauffeur meets you at Chennai (MAA) and transfers you to your hotel in Tamil Nadu's coastal capital.

Your first temple is the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, a classic Dravidian shrine to Shiva with a vividly painted gopuram tower, followed as time allows by Marina Beach and the colonial Fort St George.

Day 2. Mahabalipuram, Shore Temple & Five Rathas

A short coastal drive brings you to Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), the 7th-century Pallava port and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You explore the sea-facing Shore Temple, the monolithic Five Rathas carved from single boulders, and the vast rock relief of Arjuna's Penance, the finest open-air gallery of early Dravidian art in India.

Day 3. Pondicherry, Auroville & the French Quarter

You drive south down the Coromandel coast to Pondicherry, the former French colony where mustard-yellow villas and bougainvillea line the seafront promenade.

You walk the French Quarter and Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and visit the experimental township of Auroville with its golden Matrimandir, a contemplative counterpoint to the temple towns.

Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry · ~2.5 hrs / 95 kmOvernight in PondicherryBreakfast

Day 4. Tanjore, Brihadisvara Temple

An inland drive takes you to Thanjavur (Tanjore), the Chola capital, past the rice fields of the Cauvery delta.

Here stands the UNESCO-listed Brihadisvara Temple, a 1,000-year-old granite masterpiece crowned by a 66-metre vimana tower and a monolithic Nandi bull, the high-water mark of Chola architecture and engineering.

Pondicherry → Tanjore · ~4.5 hrs / 180 kmOvernight in TanjoreBreakfast

Day 5. Madurai, Meenakshi Temple Evening Ceremony

You continue south to Madurai, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, built around its living temple.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the trip's centrepiece, a riot of thousand-figure gopurams and a hall of a thousand pillars, and in the evening you witness the nightly ceremony in which an image of Shiva is carried to Meenakshi's chamber.

Day 6. Rameswaram, Pamban Bridge & Ramanathaswamy Temple

You drive out to the sacred island of Rameswaram, crossing the sea on the iconic Pamban rail-and-road bridge with the Palk Strait on either side.

The Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and a Char Dham pilgrimage site, is famed for its immense pillared corridors, the longest of any temple in India, and its 22 holy wells.

Day 7. Kanyakumari, Sunset at Land's End

A long coastal drive brings you to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland where the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean meet.

You visit the Kumari Amman Temple and settle in for the celebrated sunset over the ocean, and, at the right time of month, the rare sight of sunset and moonrise together.

The afternoon is free for the Gandhi Memorial and a sunrise or sunset by the confluence, or an early rest before the final leg.

Frequently asked

Can non-Hindus enter these temples?

Most Tamil Nadu temples on this route, Kapaleeshwarar, Brihadisvara, Meenakshi, Ramanathaswamy, welcome visitors of all faiths into the main complex, though inner sanctums may be restricted to Hindus at some shrines. Modest dress is required and shoes are removed; your guide advises on etiquette at each site.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

November to March is by far the most comfortable, with cooler, drier days for the long drives and temple walks. April to June is punishingly hot on the Tamil plains, and the October to December northeast monsoon can bring heavy coastal rain, so we plan around the dry window.

Is there a dress code, and how much walking is involved?

Temples require modest clothing, shoulders and knees covered, and you'll walk barefoot on stone floors that get hot midday, so we time visits for morning and evening. Expect moderate walking over uneven, sometimes crowded ground; the pace can be softened for older pilgrims.

Are the drives long?

A few legs are substantial, Rameswaram to Kanyakumari on Day 7 is around seven hours, but they run through changing coastal and delta scenery, and your private car allows comfort stops whenever you like. We break up the longest days with meal and photo halts.

Will we see the temple ceremonies?

Yes, the itinerary is timed for the famous evening ceremony at Madurai's Meenakshi Temple, and your guide helps you catch aarti and rituals elsewhere where schedules allow. Ceremony timings shift with the temple calendar, so we confirm them close to travel.

Can you add a Kerala backwaters or hill extension?

Very easily, the tour already ends at Trivandrum in Kerala, so a houseboat night in Alleppey, the beaches of Kovalam or the tea hills of Munnar slot on naturally. Share your dates and we'll design and quote the extension.
