Ratnagiri

Alphonso Coast of the Konkan

Overview

Ratnagiri is the principal coastal city of Maharashtra's Konkan, a district capital set among cliffs, fishing harbours, and beaches on the Arabian Sea. It is India's home of the Alphonso mango, the GI-tagged Ratnagiri Hapus, among the world's finest, and a place layered with history: Thibaw Palace, built in 1910 to 11 for Thibaw Min, the exiled last king of Burma; the birthplace of the freedom leader Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak; and the horseshoe-shaped Ratnadurg (Bhagwati) Fort above the sea. Nearby lie Ganpatipule and the wider Konkan coast. MyTripMyTravel runs Ratnagiri as a coastal heritage, beach, and mango leg.

Ratnagiri is the Konkan's confident coastal capital, a working city of fishing harbours, laterite cliffs, and quiet beaches strung along the Arabian Sea, roughly midway down Maharashtra's long western shore. Its name means 'hill of jewels', and for much of India its greatest jewel is a fruit: this is the heartland of the Alphonso mango, the GI-tagged Ratnagiri Hapus, whose fragrant, saffron-fleshed fruit is counted among the finest mangoes anywhere and defines the region's spring.

For its size, Ratnagiri carries remarkable history. Thibaw Palace, a three-storey mansion built in 1910 to 11, was the exile home of Thibaw Min, the last king of Burma, deposed by the British and held here until his death in 1916, a strange, poignant corner of imperial history preserved as a museum. The city is also the birthplace of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the towering figure of the early independence movement, whose ancestral home is now a memorial; and it was here, during his internment in the 1920s and 30s, that the reformer V.D. Savarkar built the Patit Pavan Mandir, opened to all castes. Guarding the shore is Ratnadurg Fort, a horseshoe-shaped stronghold wrapped around a headland, with a Bhagwati temple and long sea views.

The coast is the everyday pleasure, Bhatye and Aare-Ware beaches, the fishing jetties, and the string of shores running up to Ganpatipule, only about 25 km north. MyTripMyTravel runs Ratnagiri as a rounded Konkan leg: coastal heritage and forts, unhurried beaches, honest Malvani-Konkani seafood, and, in season, the mango orchards that made the region famous, easily linked with Ganpatipule, Tarkarli, or Kolhapur.

When to visit

October to May

October to May is the comfortable season for the coast, beaches, and forts, with the Alphonso mango harvest peaking around April and May, the single best time for anyone chasing the Hapus at its source. Winter (November to February) is the most pleasant for sightseeing. The southwest monsoon (June to September) turns the Konkan intensely green and dramatic, but heavy rain and rough seas limit beach time and boat trips, so we keep those itineraries flexible around the weather.

Good to know

Ratnagiri, your questions

Why is Ratnagiri famous for mangoes?

It is the heartland of the Alphonso, or Hapus, mango, the GI-tagged Ratnagiri Alphonso is prized as one of the world's finest mangoes for its aroma and flavour. The harvest peaks around April and May, when we arrange orchard visits and tastings at the source.

What is Thibaw Palace?

A mansion built in 1910 to 11 to house Thibaw Min, the last king of Burma, whom the British exiled to Ratnagiri; he lived and died here in 1916. It is now a museum and one of the more unusual and moving heritage sites on the Konkan coast.

How does Ratnagiri connect with Ganpatipule?

Ganpatipule and its famous seaside Ganesha temple are only about 25 km north, a 45-minute coastal drive, so the two pair naturally. Tarkarli, Malvan, and Kolhapur are also within an easy circuit.

Is seafood and alcohol available?

Yes. Ratnagiri is a coastal Konkan city famous for its seafood, and Maharashtra is not a dry state, so fresh fish, Malvani-Konkani cooking, and drinks are all readily available.

When is the best time to visit?

October to May for the beaches and forts, with April and May best for the Alphonso harvest. The monsoon greens the coast beautifully but limits beach and boat time, so we plan around it.
