Tadoba

Maharashtra's Premier Tiger Country

Overview

Tadoba, or the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, is the oldest and largest national park in Maharashtra, in the Chandrapur district, the state's premier destination for wild tiger sightings. Established as a national park in 1955 and later a Project Tiger reserve, its teak forests, lakes, and the Andhari river shelter tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, gaur, and marsh crocodiles. Sightings are exceptional here by Indian standards but, as with any wild reserve, never guaranteed, and the core zone closes through the monsoon. MyTripMyTravel runs Tadoba as a conservation-grade safari leg, permit and gate logistics, strong naturalists, and quality forest lodges.

Tadoba is where central India's wilderness meets Maharashtra, and it has quietly become one of the country's best places to see a wild tiger. The Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, the state's oldest, gazetted as a national park in 1955, and later brought under Project Tiger, spreads across dense teak and bamboo forest in the Chandrapur district, cut by the Andhari river and studded with lakes.

It is far more than a single species. Alongside its well-known tigers, the reserve holds leopards, sloth bears, packs of wild dogs (dhole), the massive gaur or Indian bison, sambar, spotted deer, and marsh crocodiles basking at the water's edge, with rich birdlife through the forest. The landscape itself, Tadoba Lake, the Andhari's channels, and the old-growth teak, makes every drive worthwhile even between sightings.

MyTripMyTravel runs Tadoba with conservation discipline and honesty. Safaris are permit-controlled and limited by zone, so we secure gate permits, pair guests with genuinely strong naturalists, and base them in quality forest lodges near the core gates. We are candid that this is wild-animal viewing, sightings are strong here but never guaranteed, and that the core zone closes through the monsoon, roughly July to September.

When to visit

October to June

The core zone is open roughly from October to June and closes through the monsoon for breeding. November to February brings the most comfortable weather, with pleasant mornings for the dawn safari. April to June is very hot but often the best window for sightings, as thinning cover and scarce water draw tigers and other wildlife to predictable pools. Safaris run in fixed morning and afternoon slots with limited permits, so we book well ahead; some buffer zones stay open even in the monsoon.

Good to know

Tadoba, your questions

Am I guaranteed to see a tiger at Tadoba?

No responsible operator can guarantee a wild sighting, but Tadoba has a healthy tiger population and some of the best sighting rates in India, especially across three or four safaris. We pair guests with strong naturalists to improve the odds.

When is the reserve open?

The core zone is open roughly October to June and closed through the monsoon, about July to September, for breeding. Some buffer zones remain open even in the rains; we plan around the calendar.

How many safaris should I plan?

We recommend at least two nights and three to four safaris, mixing core and buffer zones and both morning and afternoon slots, which meaningfully raises your chances.

How do I reach Tadoba?

Fly into Nagpur (NAG), about 140 km away, and transfer by road, roughly three hours to the core gates. Chandrapur is the nearest railhead. We handle the handover and transfers.

What else might I see besides tigers?

Leopards, sloth bears, packs of wild dogs, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, and marsh crocodiles, along with rich birdlife, the forest rewards every drive, sighting or not.

When are sightings most likely?

The hot months of April to June concentrate wildlife around scarce water and often produce the best sightings, while November to February is far more comfortable weather; we help you weigh the trade-off.
