Thanjavur

The Chola Capital of the Great Temple

Overview

Thanjavur, historically Tanjore, is a city in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu and the former capital of the mighty Chola empire. Its crowning monument is the Brihadeeswarar Temple, completed around 1010 CE under Raja Raja Chola I, whose granite vimana rises some 66 metres, among the tallest temple towers in the world. It is one of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples. Thanjavur is also the home of Tanjore gold-leaf painting, the Thanjavur veena, and Chola bronze art. MyTripMyTravel runs Thanjavur as a deep Chola-heritage leg, escorted temple access, art-gallery bronzes, and visits to living painting and craft ateliers.

Thanjavur is where the Chola empire built in stone at the scale of its ambition. A thousand years ago this delta city commanded a maritime power that reached across the Bay of Bengal, and its rulers left behind a temple so vast and so precisely engineered that it still stands, virtually intact, as the finest expression of Chola architecture.

The Brihadeeswarar Temple, Peruvudaiyar Kovil to Tamils, is entirely of granite, a stone found nowhere near the delta, hauled in and raised into a soaring vimana crowned by a single massive capstone. Its courtyards, the great Nandi bull, and its Chola-era frescoes reward a slow, guided visit. Beyond the temple, Thanjavur holds the Maratha-era palace complex, the Saraswathi Mahal Library of rare manuscripts, and an art gallery of exquisite Chola bronzes.

MyTripMyTravel treats Thanjavur as the scholarly high point of the Tamil temple trail. Guests are walked through the temple's engineering and iconography with an expert, shown the bronze and manuscript collections, and taken into the ateliers where Tanjore gold-leaf painting and the classical veena are still made by hand.

When to visit

October to March

The dry, cooler window from October to March is ideal for exploring the temple courtyards and the palace complex in comfort. This delta region sees the northeast monsoon around October and November, which greens the surrounding rice country but can bring passing showers. The city hosts music and heritage events in the cooler months. April to June is hot and best confined to early-morning and late-afternoon sightseeing with an air-conditioned fleet.
