September to March for dry days and green hills; the backwaters and tea estates are at their most photogenic just after the monsoon.
Day by day itinerary
Day 1. Kochi, Arrival & Fort Kochi Heritage Walk
Your chauffeur meets you at Cochin (COK) arrivals and transfers you to your Fort Kochi hotel, the layered old town where Portuguese, Dutch and British quarters sit side by side.
An easy afternoon walk takes in the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, St Francis Church (once Vasco da Gama's resting place), and the spice-scented lanes and antique shops of Jew Town and Mattancherry.
Day 2. Munnar, Drive Through the Tea Hills
You climb from the coast into the Western Ghats, the road winding past roadside waterfalls, spice groves and the first sweeping tea slopes as you gain altitude toward Munnar at around 1,600 metres.
Arriving by afternoon, you settle into your hill hotel with the cool, eucalyptus-scented air that makes Munnar Kerala's favourite escape from the heat. The evening is free for tea and the view.
Day 3. Munnar, Eravikulam Park & Tea Country
The morning is Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr and, in season, the rare Neelakurinji bloom; a shuttle carries you up to the high-altitude grasslands beneath Anamudi, South India's tallest peak.
In the afternoon the Tata Tea Museum walks you through Munnar's colonial planting history and a live tasting, before a drive out past Mattupetty Dam and the Echo Point lake for photographs.
Day 4. Thekkady, Periyar Wildlife & Spice Gardens
A scenic morning drive brings you down to Thekkady, gateway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of India's best-known elephant and wildlife sanctuaries wrapped around a lake.
You take a guided cruise on Periyar Lake to watch for elephant, gaur and deer at the water's edge, then tour a working cardamom-and-pepper spice plantation to see how Kerala earned its name in the spice trade.
Day 5. Alleppey, Private Houseboat on the Backwaters
You descend from the hills to Alleppey (Alappuzha) and board your private Kettuvallam houseboat, a converted rice barge with an ensuite cabin, sundeck and onboard cook.
The afternoon drifts through the palm-fringed canals and lagoons of the Kuttanad backwaters, past paddy fields below sea level and village life on the banks, with a fresh Keralan lunch and dinner served aboard and the boat mooring for the night.
Day 6. Kochi, Return & Kathakali Performance
After a sunrise cruise and breakfast on the water, you disembark and drive back up the coast to Kochi for check-in and an afternoon at leisure.
In the evening you attend a Kathakali performance, Kerala's centuries-old classical dance-drama of elaborate make-up, mudras and expression; arriving early lets you watch the performers apply their masks by hand.
Day 7. Kochi, Departure
A relaxed final morning allows for last-minute shopping for spices, coir and Keralan tea before check-out.
Your chauffeur transfers you to Cochin airport in good time for your onward flight.

Frequently asked
Do we get a private houseboat or a shared one?
Private. The Alleppey Kettuvallam on Day 5 is yours alone, an ensuite cabin, private sundeck and a dedicated cook and crew, so you cruise and moor on your own schedule rather than sharing with other travellers.
When is the best time to visit Kerala?
September to March is ideal: the monsoon has left the hills lush and the backwaters full, while the weather stays dry and pleasant. April to May is hot and humid on the coast; June to August brings the heavy monsoon, which some travellers love for the greenery and lower rates.
Will we actually see wildlife at Periyar?
Periyar is a genuine tiger reserve, but it's best known for reliable sightings of elephant, gaur, sambar deer and abundant birdlife from the lake cruise. Tiger and leopard are present but rarely seen, we set honest expectations rather than overpromise big cats.
How much walking and altitude is involved in Munnar?
Munnar sits at around 1,600 m with cool weather and gentle walking; Eravikulam involves a short shuttle plus a modest uphill stroll on paved paths. It suits most fitness levels, and the pace can be softened for older travellers on request.
Can you add an Ayurveda retreat or a beach stay?
Yes, Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, and we regularly extend this tour with a supervised programme at a vetted centre or a few nights at Marari or Kovalam beach. Share your dates and we'll design and quote the extension.
Is this trip suitable for families and older travellers?
Very much so, the drives are scenic rather than gruelling, the houseboat and hill resorts are comfortable, and the private car allows rest stops and flexible timings. We tailor walking distances and activities to your group's needs.
