The Seat of the Karmapa Rumtek Monastery, near Gangtok in Sikkim, India, is the largest monastery in the state and the principal seat in exile of the Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. The present complex, completed in the 1960s, is modelled on the original Tsurphu monastery in Tibet and houses rare relics, golden stupas, and the Karma Shri Nalanda Institute.
