Phalodi
The Salt City and the Crane Village
Overview
Phalodi is a city in the Phalodi district of Rajasthan, India, on the buffer edge of the Thar Desert, long nicknamed the 'salt city' for the salt industry around the nearby Rin. It holds India's highest reliably recorded temperature, 51°C, set in 2016. Its greatest draw sits just beyond, at Khichan village, where thousands of migratory demoiselle cranes gather each winter at a Ramsar-listed wetland, one of the most spectacular bird congregations in India. Phalodi itself preserves sandstone havelis and Phalodi Fort. It lies about 135 km from Jodhpur. MyTripMyTravel operates Phalodi and Khichan as a chauffeured desert-and-crane excursion, the crane spectacle is seasonal.
Phalodi is a hard, honest desert town, a former salt-trading and caravan centre on the arid road between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, its old quarter dotted with the sandstone havelis of merchants who once grew rich on the trade. It carries a couple of superlatives: the 'salt city' nickname from the salt pans of the surrounding Rin, and, less enviably, the record for the highest temperature ever reliably measured in India, 51°C, in 2016, a reminder of how extreme the Thar can get.
The real reason to come sits about five kilometres away, at the village of Khichan. Every winter, from roughly late August, tens of thousands of demoiselle cranes, known locally as kurja, migrate from Central Asia to feed here, drawn by decades of village grain-feeding and the wetland's protected, Ramsar-listed status. The morning and evening fly-ins, when the sky fills with cranes over the dunes, are among the great wildlife spectacles of India.
MyTripMyTravel runs Phalodi and Khichan as a specialised, seasonal excursion off the desert circuit. The honesty matters: the cranes are migratory, so the spectacle is a winter event, densest from about November to February. Our planners time the visit to the fly-ins, arrange quiet viewing that does not disturb the birds, and pair it with Phalodi's havelis and the wider Jodhpur to Bikaner to Jaisalmer desert arc.
At a glance
Phalodi in brief
When to visit
November to February (crane season)
For the demoiselle cranes, winter is everything: the birds begin arriving around late August and build to tens of thousands, with the densest and most reliable spectacle from about November to February, viewed at the dawn and dusk fly-ins. This same window is also the most comfortable for the desert heat. From March the cranes thin out and depart, and by April to June Phalodi is brutally hot, this is the town that recorded 51°C. Time a visit to the winter to see Khichan at its full drama.

Good to know
Phalodi, your questions
When can I see the demoiselle cranes at Khichan?
The cranes are migratory, arriving from around late August and building to tens of thousands, with the densest and most reliable spectacle from about November to February. Outside these winter months the numbers fall away, so timing is everything, which our planners build the visit around.
How far is Khichan from Phalodi?
About 5 km. Phalodi town, with its havelis and fort, is the base, and Khichan village, with the feeding grounds and wetland, is a short drive away, timed for the morning and evening fly-ins.
Is Phalodi really the hottest place in India?
It holds the record for India's highest reliably recorded temperature, 51°C, set in May 2016. That extreme is precisely why we run Phalodi as a winter destination, when the desert is comfortable and the cranes are present.
How is Phalodi best combined?
As part of the western desert arc with Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer. It slots in as a specialised crane-and-salt-city overnight rather than a standalone trip.
