Alwar

Aravalli Forts and the Gateway to Sariska

Overview

Alwar is a city in north-eastern Rajasthan, roughly midway between Delhi and Jaipur at about 150 km from each. Founded in 1770 by Pratap Singh of the Kachwaha dynasty, it is ringed by the Aravalli hills and known as the 'Gateway to Sariska,' the tiger reserve on its doorstep. Its heritage includes the hilltop Bala Quila fort, the ornate City Palace (Vinay Vilas Mahal), the Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri cenotaph, and the lakeside Siliserh Palace. Nearby lie the atmospheric ruins of Bhangarh. Alwar is celebrated for its milk cake and serves as the natural base for Sariska safaris.

Alwar is the Rajasthan city that most Golden Triangle travellers pass without realising what they are missing. Founded in 1770 and cradled by the Aravalli range, it carries a dense layer of Rajput and colonial-era heritage, and, crucially, it is the doorway to the Sariska tiger reserve, which makes it far more than a waypoint.

The monuments repay a proper visit. The Bala Quila fort crowns the ridge above the city, reached by a winding hill road; below it, the ornately decorated City Palace (Vinay Vilas Mahal) and the elegant Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri cenotaph sit around a stepped tank. A short drive out, the Siliserh lake palace, an 1845 hunting lodge on the water, and the famously eerie ruins of Bhangarh add range to a stay.

For MyTripMyTravel, Alwar is a strategic base rather than a rushed stop. It anchors Sariska safaris, absorbs Bhangarh and Siliserh as half-day excursions, and offers a genuinely off-circuit Rajasthan that most itineraries skip. We run it as a chauffeured wildlife-and-heritage node between the Golden Triangle cities.

When to visit

October to March

October to March is the prime window, aligning comfortable sightseeing weather with the productive Sariska safari season for guests using Alwar as a wildlife base. Winter mornings are cold and clear, ideal for the hill climb to Bala Quila and for early game drives. April to June is very hot, though tiger sightings around Sariska's waterholes can actually improve in the heat. The monsoon (July to September) greens the Aravallis but limits core safari access.
