Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar's Abandoned Capital in Red Sandstone

Overview

Fatehpur Sikri is a red-sandstone town in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, about 37 km west of Agra, that served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585 under Emperor Akbar before being abandoned. Its walled complex of palaces, courtyards, and mosques is a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1986, crowned by the 54-metre Buland Darwaza, among the tallest gateways in the world, and the white-marble tomb of the Sufi saint Salim Chishti. It sits directly on the Agra to Jaipur road, making it the natural heritage stop on the Golden Triangle's western leg.

Fatehpur Sikri is the most complete Mughal city that no longer functions as one. Built by Akbar in the 1570s as a purpose-designed imperial capital, it was occupied for barely fourteen years before the court moved on, leaving behind an entire seat of empire in near-perfect condition, its palaces, audience halls, and mosque frozen at the moment they were vacated.

The scale is deceptive from the road. Through the towering Buland Darwaza, the complex opens into a sequence of sandstone courts: the Diwan-i-Khas with its extraordinary central pillar, the tiered Panch Mahal catching the wind, Jodha Bai's Palace, and the serene marble dargah of Salim Chishti, still an active place of prayer where visitors tie threads for a wish. Every surface is carved; almost nothing is later reconstruction.

The mistake most travellers make is treating Fatehpur Sikri as a rushed midpoint. Handled well, it is a two-hour immersion that most people remember as vividly as Agra Fort. MyTripMyTravel positions it as the deliberate heritage break on the chauffeured Agra-to-Jaipur leg, with an expert guide who reads the architecture rather than a hurried queue in the midday sun.

When to visit

October to March

October to March offers cool, clear days ideal for walking the open sandstone courtyards, which hold heat and offer little shade. Early morning is best, the light rakes across the carving and the site is quietest before the day-tripper coaches arrive from Agra. April to June brings severe heat above 40°C, when a dawn visit with an air-conditioned fleet is the only comfortable approach. The monsoon (July to September) deepens the sandstone's colour but can make the exposed stone slick.

Good to know

Fatehpur Sikri, your questions

Is Fatehpur Sikri worth stopping for?

Yes. It is one of the best-preserved Mughal cities anywhere and is directly on the Agra to Jaipur road, so it adds no meaningful detour. Most guests rate it among the highlights of the western leg.

How long should I spend there?

Around 90 minutes to two hours covers the palace complex and the Jama Masjid with the tomb of Salim Chishti at an unhurried pace with a guide.

Why was Fatehpur Sikri abandoned?

It was vacated within about fifteen years of completion, commonly attributed to water scarcity and Akbar's military campaigns in the north-west, which drew the court away permanently.

Is it easy to combine with Agra?

Very. We typically see the Taj Mahal at sunrise and Agra Fort, then depart for Jaipur with Fatehpur Sikri as the mid-morning heritage stop en route.

Are the palace complex and mosque one ticket?

They are two separate areas, the ticketed royal palace complex and the free-to-enter Jama Masjid with the dargah. Our escort manages tickets and access so nothing is missed.

Is there much walking?

Yes, across open sandstone courtyards with little shade, so comfortable shoes and a morning slot in the cooler months make a real difference.
